Food for thought...

I always found it funny when fans got all emotional in arguments and referred to the Steelers as "WE". As in..."We beat the shit out of you (meaning other team)!"

I dunno..I think that's funny as "we" did nothing but sit on a couch or in a bar and watch the Steelers win or lose...

Just an observation. People like ownership.

Yeah pretty funny!! It's strange to think about it that way, but it's also shows how much 53 other guys mean so much to US!!!!!!!

They should make that into one of those, without sports commercials..

We feel like we're part of the team! And what a grand team it is!

We support them with sales....... sure we are just fans, but without us there would be no big salaries, and for that matter no NFL period. So yes we know it isn't us playing, but I see nothing wrong with saying catch phrases like "we" and "us/our". Fans are a part of the equation....... As we all are a part of the team showing our support, and love for the game through purchases or simply rooting for our team weekly.

I also use the terms "we" and "us" to refer to my favortie teams, and I do feel stupid when someone (especially non-fans) points it out to me. I don't know why I do it but I will say that when it comes to the Steelers, PSU, and the Pistons I am one of their biggest supporters. All three franchises are a big part of my life...

Bottom line... I win with them, and I lose with them. The outcome of their games, and thier success throught the season means a lot to me and effects my life. A big win or a bad loss can change my mood for days. To me.... I am a part of it.

Conspiracy theorists will tell you that modern sports has replaced Religion as Karl Marx's "Opiate of the masses". But I think they are full of shit.

Athletics and competition are inherent in our nature, and, since very few of us can achieve the highest levels of competition, we naturally tend to live vicariously through our chosen teams/players.

There is also the factor of us, as fans, publicly "assuming" the persona of our teams. In effect, it is "We", since most sports bars will also have representatives from the opposing team present. It naturally drifts into an "Us versus them" scenario. Again, perfectly healthy and normal.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I am not really making fun of this or saying there is something wrong with it. It's fine. I just find it personally humorous.

My old roommate's best way to end an argument with a fan of the other team during a game:

Other fan: "We're kicking your ass!"
My roommate: "We?"

Classic...

I just think "we" is easier than writing "The Steelers" everytime. As a pronoun, it's better than "they" because that's what we already use to describe the other team.

I can't beleive WE beat Ohio State... OUR defense played great, and WE controlled them whole game. They never had a chance against US. :bouncy:
