Tracy Fired
Pirates firing manager Jim Tracy
Friday, October 05, 2007
By Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Pirates have called a news conference for 3:30 p.m. today to announce the firing of manager Jim Tracy after two losing seasons.

Tracy, 51, went 133-189, including 68-94 in the season that ended Sunday, since former general manager Dave Littlefield hired him Oct. 11, 2005. Littlefield was fired earlier in the month, and the decision regarding the manager was left up to his replacement, Neal Huntington. Team president Frank Coonelly also was heavily involved in the process.

Tracy has a year left on his three-year contract at a salary of $1 million.

Tracy's tenure included the 14th and 15th consecutive losing seasons for the Pirates, matching the second-longest droughts in professional sports history. The longest is 16, set by the 1933-48 Philadelphia Phillies.

Before coming to Pittsburgh, Tracy was the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers for five years, with a 427-383 record and one first-place finish in 2004.

The next manager will be the Pirates' 38th overall and the fifth in the 11 years since Jim Leyland left in 1996.

WOOOO HOOOO! Another part of the managerial staff gone. 1 More to go and we can possibly have some more optimism.

Good. I cursed that hire from day one, and Tracy did nothing to disappoint me. When you actually make me long for Lloyd McClendon, you know you're a horrible manager.

I hope that whomever they hire as the next manager, he has at least a passing knowledge of the game and hires a staff that's at least reasonably competent. Both would be significant upgrades over Tracy and his band of idiots.

Are you all serious? Unless the hire a good GM, what does it matter who coaches the P's? Crap in, crap out.

Thank goodness. I can't stand Tracy. I just hope they don't trade Jack Wilson

I'm willing to give this Huntington a chance. He came from the Indians organization and had a major role in rebuilding the team into a winner (hmmm, kind of like Pens' GM Ray Shero), so he has a bit of a pedigree. The Pirates also fired the entire scouting and player development staff, so Huntington and Frank Coonelly will now be able to bring in their own guys. They might be the most important hires outside of a new manager, because they will be instrumental in acquiring and developing talent within the organization, something that has been desperately needed for many years. With Baghdad Bob Nutting running the show and refusing to spend money, that is the only way the Pirates will ever hope to have a winning season.

Re: Tracy Fired
I am friends with a lot of former players & coaches for the P's. They all say that no one feels the "need" or "drive" to win. Really sad.

Hell, Craig Wilson has sat at my kitchen table and they did him wrong.

Rich Donnely (Leyland's right hand man) is my Uncle's good friend.

Maybe these are bitter folks, but the P's don't seem like they want to win.

Re: Tracy Fired
JimMac, I'm with you 95%.

First off, I'm not a Tracy fan. IMO, there is NO REASON for that team to be as bad as it was this past season. There were times I was wondering if the guy was still breathing. Hell, Tracy could be a great manager if he had the Yankees or Red Sox, but he wasn't good here. Like I said and please keep this mind, I was not expecting this to team to crack .500, but I did not expect us to stink as bad as we did. I believe Tracy deserves some blame. Plus, when you get a new GM, he wants a new managing staff, perfectly understandable if you ask me.

Second, I'm of the very strong belief that I don't care who you put in there, nothing is going to change. As long as Nutting is writing the checks this team will completely suck. Fire the GM, fire the manager....hell, fire the bat boy, I do not see much changing as long as Nutting holds the wallet.

Finally, I'm sure we will hear come April.......

"Well, we cleaned house, we are ready for that playoff push!!!!"

Hell, I'm willing to bet we don't crack .500. I see nothing changing. Once again, as long as Nutting holds the wallet. Until Nutting sells to an owner who wants to win, I have very strong doubts. Can you blame me? When I hear that the Pirates have sold to an owner who is willing to spend, then I will get excited. Until then......same old, same old Pirates.
