tony stewart leaving gibbs- joining haas/cnc in 09

the new team will be stewart/haas, and he will have hendrick equipment and be reunited with chevy.

as per espn's marty smith.

i hope he goes and blows.

but i guess its a smart move. better to race for ownership rather than $$$$.

i assume zipadelli will be leaving too. stewart has said he would rather retire than drive for another crewchief.

Can't imagine him driving for anyone but HD...I'm guessing they tag along as well.

nope. HD is married to gibbs, not stewart.

JGR is expected to replace the 37-year-old Stewart, one of NASCAR's most celebrated drivers, with 18-year-old phenom Joey Logano with Home Depot staying on board as the sponsor.

it looks like haas and hendrick have a connection other than auto racing-

Gene Haas, owner of the two-car team, began serving a two-year prison sentence for tax evasion in January.
stewart and newman would make a hell of a 2 car team.

Stewart is expected to gut the organization and bring in his own people, including a second driver. Fellow Indiana native Ryan Newman is among those rumored to be in line to join Stewart's team next season.
i hate to see team penske go down the shitter though. other than newman, their talent scouting sucks.

gaughan, kvapil, hornish jr. :dang:

maybe their jasper/penske engines have just become nascar dinosaurs.

maybe if newman leaves, then truex jr can take over the 12 car. i hear he is not too happy at DEI right now.. especially after his car got impounded by nascar and he lost 150pts and bono is now gone for 6 weeks

Stewart granted release from JGR

Joe Gibbs Racing will release Tony Stewart from his contract at the end of the season, ending an incredibly successful decade in which they won two championships and turned the organization into one of NASCAR's best

Stewart was expected to address JGR employees Wednesday, but his release, which J.D. Gibbs called "bittersweet," was announced by the team.

"While this moment is bittersweet, we're parting on good terms and we know that each of us has benefited greatly from the other," Gibbs said in the statement.

Stewart's departure opens the door for him to buy a NASCAR team. He's had an offer since April to purchase the fledgling Haas-CNC two-car team.

Stewart could announce as early as Thursday that he's acquired majority ownership of Haas, which has been run by general manager Joe Custer since owner Gene Haas began serving a two-year prison sentence for tax evasion in January.

He's expected to drive one of the cars, while fellow Indiana native Ryan Newman is believed to be in the running for the second seat. Newman has been noncommittal on his future plans, and the Daytona 500 winner is in the final year of his contract with Penske Racing.

Stewart, who owns several sprint car teams and a trio of race tracks — including famed Eldora Speedway in Ohio — will likely model his NASCAR team after the Gibbs organization. Owner Joe Gibbs has supported Stewart unequivocally through a tumultuous 10 years that saw the temperamental driver punch a photographer, engage in run-ins with fellow drivers, fans and the media, and often fall on NASCAR's bad side through his jaw-dropping candor and sharp wit.

I think this is great news. I like Tony as a driver, but could never stand Home Depot. I would never buy anything with Home Depot on it, but now I look forward to supporting Tony.

Most owner/drivers crumble under the pressure, but he seems to be able to pull it off.

DW had a nice article on foxsports and thinks so too.

DW noted his own team was a start up and he thought too much like a driver as opposed to an entreprenuer (which tony is).

he is already a successful owner of eldora racetrack and sprint car teams.
he's taking over an established team, with a nice new shop.
he will have support from hendrick.
chevy will throw a ton of cash at him.
he can pick the cream of the FA crop for a teammate.
