In a game critical to the Steelers' postseason ambitions against the NFL's No. 1-ranked defense, running back Jerome Bettis answered the call off the bench to rush for two touchdowns and 101 yards on 17 carries (5.9-yard average) in a 21-9 home win against Chicago. One hundred of the Detroit native's rushing yards came in the second half after his first carry -- a 1-yard TD run -- gave the Steelers a 14-3 edge before halftime. Six of Bettis' 16 second-half rushes resulted in either a first down or touchdown while the 255-pounder churned out at least four yards on seven of those carries atop a mud- and snow-covered field. With the victory, Pittsburgh (8-5) gained ground in the AFC playoff race and snapped a three-game skid. Sunday marked the 61st 100-yard rushing game for Bettis, his 50th for the Steelers. Only Emmitt Smith (78) and Pro Football Hall of Famers Walter Payton (77), Barry Sanders (76) and Eric Dickerson (64) have posted more career 100-yard rushing performances.

In his 13th year from Notre Dame, this is the fourth Player of the Week award of Bettis' career and his second in as many seasons.
