Bought a car for my son!

Yes...I have joined the ranks of the worried, the nervous and the anxious. My son has now turned 16 and has his license.

My wife and are not poor by any means and would "probably" be described as upper middle class by some, but make no mistake, we are not rich....and we BOTH come from pretty humble backgrounds.

We wrestled with the idea of buying our son a vehicle....do we get something nice or let him drive our vehicles but fret about it getting scratched, dented, or "mistreated"!!?? Do we get something used that may have to pay regularly for repairs and upkeep or worry about breaking down? Do we get him a 10-speed and tell him "dont even LOOK at our cars until your 18"!!

Well, as fate would have it, my father-in-law called the other day and wanted us to look at a car for sale near his house. When I asked what kind, he told me it was a 1993 Ford Tempo.

Out of respect I took my son over and three amazing things happened.

1) My son LOVED the car
2) I saw that the body has absolutely no dents or rust
3) and I learned that It has only 59,000 miles on it.

The older couple who owned the vehicle go to the same mechanic as we do and he verified that the miles were accurate and that the car was in great shape. $900.00 later (plus $220 dollars for Illinois tax and title) and we have a fuel-efficient third vehicle for our oldest child.

I actually drove it to work today and let my son take my car .....hmmmmmmm.....so maybe it wasnt such a great idea!:chuckle:

Nice. I had to pay for my cars.

I had a Pontiac Grand Am GT ('96 I think) paid for it myself. Had it for awhile until the transmission died.

Then I got a 2003 Dodge Neon and its been great ever since

im sorry. i bought about a 10 year old one (86 or 87) put a brand new motor in it, and found out exactly why TEMPO is short for "temporary".

hopefully you gus have better luck. the ones from the 80s were notorious for being pieces of crap. (even my 82 fairmont was better.)

I had to pay for my vehicles as well. My first car was a '94 Mazda pick-up truck that I bought when I was 17. I drove that for about 2 years then bought myself a '98 Chevy Malibu in '08. I love my Chevy, it's treated me very well so far. Congrats to your son on getting his license and first car!

I had to pay for my first car too, it was a 75 Mustang kept together with Duct tape with bald tires, but I was happy when I bought it.

Your son sounds like a good kid who appreciates your gift, congrats!

What about a Yamaha FZ6 or Kawasaki Ninja 500 instead?

My parents actually bought me a Tempo for my first car and its was a POS, it wouldn't even start without doing a million things to it. Eventually they bought me a Grand Am which drove wonderfully in the winter and summer for a while.
