Deferring opening kick in OT: An advantage?

if any game this playoffs looks to be the 1st to test the new rules, steelers-baltimore is it.

i think tomlin, harbaugh and every other coach in the league would take the ball especially with a rule this new and untested. but if your defense is on fire you can force a 3 and out, punt, get the ball at the 40 + return, and in 3 plays be in fg range for the win.:scratchchin:

. There is a new postseason-only overtime procedure, but it never came into play. But it was a hot topic where I was in CBS Studios, and it could present a few coaching decisions next week. I had a long discussion Saturday about the strategy of the new overtime with Bill Cowher, and I was hoping to see it come into play.

The new rules basically state that if the team that receives the kickoff scores on a field goal, the opposing team gets a chance to tie the score with a field goal or win it with a touchdown. Of course, if the first team to possess the ball scores a touchdown, instead of a field goal, the game ends.

The question of deferring if you win the toss came up with Coach Cowher, which would never come up in the regular-season sudden-death structure. Cowher agreed with me that if, after regulation, in a low-scoring game, say 10-10, and my team is based on defense, like Pittsburgh, and at home in tough weather conditions, we might see a coach defer and play defense first knowing only a touchdown can beat him on the first possession. Stop the team and make them punt, or in the worst case kick a field goal.

Point is the team that deferred might have an advantage. Next weekend there are three games outside, where weather could be a factor, and I wonder what the coaches will do if put in this situation.

I would prefer to kick it first.
But... a touchdown automatically wins it if you're on your first drive. So Steelers get it, playaction, 65 yard bomb to Wallace for a touchdown and win the game.

Winners should want the ball. I say receive, move down the field and win the game.

Agreed. Put the pressure on them to score by doing it first.

I prefer to defer to the second half.

I'm a huge believer that the defer works in our favor in the second half due to the fact that the Steelers are a clocked managed team that plays physical in tight ball games that we are built for game winning drives in the last minutes. The defer sets us up to possibly control the second half tempo in our favor.

As far as deferring the O.T, you'd be out of your DAMN mind. You take the ball every single time right out the gate. End it NOW is the formula.

No coach will have the balls to make that call, even if it were a 3-3 game and it was the right call.
Remember 2 things, TD ends it, and after each team gets 1 possession it is again back to sudden death.
So even in a defensive battle, having the 3rd possession could be huge.

I could see this game testing the new OT rules. But take the kick!

this is my thinking as well, however i definitely understand cowhers logic. i have heard related discussions on the topic and a decent case is made.

i'd like to see the rule extended to regular season games so the theory could be tested and patterns or statistics be built up.

while no coach will take the risk in the playoffs (thats the type of decision that can get one fired) i think a few might be more inclined to gamble in the regular season.

I agree. If they were going to do this, I would like to have seen them do at the beginning of the season. I don't like changing rules during the season. The playoffs is a hell of a time to throw in a new wrinkle.
