Steelers dont draft a LB????

I am absolutely thrilled with the selection of Holmes...

I bitched and moaned on this site for weeks that the Steelers FO trade up 7 or 8 slots if Holmes experienced a draft day slide... which they did so I couldnt be more happy about that.

I will say I was a little surprised that they seleccted the retrun specialist from FSU in round 3 because Holmes could definitely return punts and kicks for us assuming he is behind Cedric on the depth chart.... which leads me to believe Holmes may give Ced a run for his money as the starting WR alongside Hines.

The safety from Syracuse... I dont think anyone knows enough to judge... it does appear, based on his grading, that he went right around where people expected him to go though.

I was stunned at the end of the day on Sunday that they seleccted zero LB's throughout the entire draft.

They must really believe in Wallace, Frazier, Kriewaldt, and Harrison....
cause Porter has a contract coming up...
Farrrior is due a paycut here in a year or so and is not exactly a spring chicken....

Wonder when the last time was that the Steelers went through an entire draft without drafting 1 LB....

Even still....... I think Holmes is gonna be more productive than El real real real soon

Wallace, Frazier, Kriewaldt, and Harrison..

5-10 years ago these guys were known as gildon, haggans, foote and porter. they are climbing the ladder like those before them have. this is the lb system that has been in place for 14 years.

no lb was taken cause there wasnt one good enough for us to reach for and cause we simply dont need one.

One should never question the Linebacker intellect of the Steelers, that's for sure.

Just FYI, I live in the Syracuse area and have seen alot of Smith on television. He was definetly a standout. In all honesty, most of my friends who watch alot more Syracuse football than I do (Penn State, baby) describe Smith as being "nasty".

We'll see though. As I'm sure everyone figures, unless Smith is absolutely incredible in training camp, Clark, Carter, etc, will have the position locked down for most of the season next year anyway, so we won't see much of Smith except for on special teams, which is where I hear he is a real star.

From what I've seen and heard, there was a pretty precipitous drop-off in talent from the first handful of guys chosen to the group we could have selected from after we addressed our own most glaring needs.

patriots or the steelers didnt take an lb. yet together they took 3 tight ends. that pretty much says what type of lb talent was out there.

what pick at LB right now would make the team ? We dont have room for LB's i dont think considering we didnt lose any and why take a chance when we have guys who already know the system and we have argueably one of the best all around LB's in the game. NEXT year, a LB may be our first pick because if you think about it.... with this years draft... LB may be the only spot we will have any sort of an abo****e need and that is ONLY if we lose Porter or Haggins. Next year we will be drafting LB and CB's all day long i would assume so i am thnking that is why we didnt go after one. No need in their mind.

That's why the Kudla pick-up was excellent. Instead of wasting a pick like they did on 'Zo, pick up a project conversion in FA. Actually, considering intangibles, I'd say Kudla has a better chance in the long run. We HAD to keep 'Zo around because we blew a first day pick on him, and it was a pressure situation for all involved. Kudla either makes it or doesn't.

Linebacker is definitely one our more stable positions, I am most intrigued by the the kid Lorella from West Virginia. I saw him a couple times and thought he fit our mold.

Thats exactly correct..the talent dropoff after about the 2nd round was significant enough to warrant reaching for a player.

We got some good prospects in the UDFA's we signed today too.
