Rashard Mendenhall Loses Endorsement Deal

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Rashard Mendenhall has lost an endorsement.

Champion cut ties with the Steelers running back because of his controversial tweets questioning the celebration of Osama bin Laden’s death, the architect of the Sept. 11 attacks, according to USA Today.

Rashard Mendenhall fired by Champion over Osama bin Laden tweets
By Michael McCarthy, USA TODAY

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall is being dropped as an endorser by corporate sponsor Champion over his controversial tweets objecting to the celebration over the death of Osama bin Laden at the hands of U.S. commandos Sunday.

Champion is "ending our business relationship" with Mendenhall since the athletic brand doesn't think he "can appropriately represent Champion," spokesman Matt Hall told Game On! Thursday night.

I'm not surprised. Sure he did nothing wrong, but he is representing an organization not just himself.

Really?! Come on now! I agree, he was stupid to say what he did. But honestly, right from the beginning I understood what he meant. I think that Champion is jumping the gun a bit here. Give the kid a break.

While you and many other intelligent people were able to discern the meaning of his tweets, you have to realize that many people were highly upset with his remarks. Champion is a business that relies on advertising, and having a player with a negative stigma placed on him, right or wrong, being one of that company's high-profile names associated with their product may steer potential buyers to a different product. I'm with you that they were a bit hasty, but understand their dilemma as well. This may be a good and expensive lesson for Mendenhall and will hopefully dissuade him from posting further controversial tweets.

I spend a lot of my time running and lifting weights in Champion shorts and dry fit shirts. I like it the quality, its cheap and I can pick it up at any target which is better than driving across town to a Dick's, or Sports Authority.

Im not one of those kooks that was saying the Steelers should trade Mendenhall for his comments and im definitely not gonna stop using Champion for pulling there
sponsorship.

As a result of my earlier post, I have lost my Trojan Condom sponsorship. DAMMIT!

You have to look at the heat that Champion will take if they continue to have Mendy representing their products. I'm sure they owners of Champion have had phone calls, emails and even protestors outside their headquarters because of Mendy. Even though no one at that company said anything about the Osama situation, if they keep him on their roster, in the media's and everyone else's eyes(believe or not) they are just as guilty as Mendy if they would've continued to support him with endorsements..
