Penguins to name Shero new GM
Penguins to name Ray Shero general manager today
Thursday, May 25, 2006

By Dave Molinari, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Penguins will name Ray Shero general manager at a press conference this afternoon.

Shero, 43, has been the assistant general manager in Nashville for the past eight years. Before that, he spent seven seasons as assistant GM in Ottawa after breaking into the business as a player agent.

He is the son of former NHL coach Fred Shero.

Shero's duties in Nashville included overseeing the team's minor-league operation in Milwaukee, negotiating contracts, working with scouts and preparing salary-arbitration cases.

At least we don't have another guy coming in that may more than 100 percent screw the penguins up.

Shero seems like a good guy for the job. Dad coached Philly to two cups. So he comes from good stalk. He did a good job with Nashville also. I like the signing.

Done a very good job in helping build a good Nashville team in a mediocre market, hopefully he can do the same here

Comments by Shero after arriving in Pittsburgh:

With Shero...he showed a keen eye for identifying talent that could play well within an up-tempo, disciplined system. Nashville's system was ahead of the NHL game before the lockout, as we saw in the 2003-04 season. It's a system that is similar to the one Therrien teaches, predicated on speed, positioning, cycling and forcing turnovers in the neutral zone.

That, to me, was the big difference between Shero and someone like Neil Smith. Smith is a very solid hockey mind with an eye for hockey talent. But he could never get the pieces to fit together, and much like Craig Patrick, that proved to be his demise. Smith and Patrick (this past season in particular) always seemed more enamored with the player's name than his ability to play a particular role.
