Jerricho Cotchery: 'Time to move on'

By Rich Cimini
ESPNNewYork.com
Archive Former New York Jets wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery, commenting for the first time since his surprising release last week, confirmed Sunday that he wanted out because he didn't see himself in the team's plans.

"It was time for a change, time for a change of scenery for myself and the organization as well," Cotchery told the Pittsburgh media. "It was time to move on. Future-wise, I didn't really see myself fitting in.

"People on the outside looking in might say, 'Well, you been there that long, you're part of the future,' but I didn't really see it that way. I think it would have been beneficial for both sides to move on."

Cotchery, 29, was released Aug. 4 after seven seasons with the Jets, and eventually landed with the Steelers. Initially, there was speculation that the Jets cut ties with him because they were pursuing former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Derrick Mason, whom they eventually signed. But coach Rex Ryan claimed that Cotchery had requested to be traded or released.

Once the Jets signed Plaxico Burress, the Jets granted Cotchery's agent permission to seek a trade. There were no takers, in part, because of his surgically repaired back. Cotchery underwent surgery in February to repair a herniated disc, and still hadn't been cleared to practice.

Cotchery, a former 1,000-yard receiver, apparently was unhappy with his role as the No. 3 receiver, behind Burress and Santonio Holmes. He felt a backup role again would hinder his ability to land a contract extension; he was due to make $1.8 million this season from the Jets.

Ryan said Cotchery was in the team's plans and would've made the roster.

There wasn't a big market for Cotchery, who settled for a backup role with the Steelers. He will be the third receiver, behind Hines Ward and Mike Wallace. He could drop to fourth when Emmanuel Sanders returns from a foot injury

if he doesnt want to be the 3rd wr i think he might be in for a disappointment. with how brown played last friday, if he keeps it up, cotchery might be the #5 guy

I find many of the FO's moves just plain weird. Many examples of what looked and felt like panic moves with regard to the wide receiving corps (Cedrick Wilson, Arnaz Battle, Cotchery, almost Burress, and I'm forgetting one or two others) and all of them unnecessary in the end. Drafting every year remains committed to linebacking and D-line. This despite the fact that our WRs, LBs and linemen are all already solid or even world class.

Meanwhile, endless patience with the O-line and cornerback positions, and a willingness to work with the guys who are on hand already. Few draft picks and even fewer free agent signings. Utterly bizarre. I will be amazed if Cotchery produces much more than Battle did last year.

unlike battle, cotchery was a solid pickup though. saying brown has potential to be better than him (and more talented) really isn't a knock against him.

True, but was he necessary, and is he worth the money, especially now given Taylor's injury and the kind of shaky performance from the O-line on Friday?

the only thing that comes to mind that makes this a worthy signing is that the Steelers might be concerned that Hines won't be able to make it through a whole season in good health, and they wanted an extra veteran wide receiver. I'll bet Hines proves them wrong if this is the case!

I agree that it seems like the FO ignores the o-line and defensive backs year after year, while going after linebackers, defensive lineman, and wr's. I can't understand it myself.

i still havent lost faith in keenan / butler, for at least one of them to be ready by week 1. maybe it's the vanilla defensive scheme that is making the secondary look worse than it is, as far as right now at least. it seemed like they were playing a prevent D almost all game

2nd Urbilk
1st Pouncey
2nd Gilbert

We haven't exactly been ignoring the O-line. It kind of goes without sayign that getting absolutely nothing out of Urbik in the 2nd hurt.

i hear the signing was for only 1.8 mil so that doesn't cost us much. I think if us signing him means battle is cut, then it's worth it. i'd rather have a capable receiever as a backup, than an incapable receiver who's supposedly some special teams ace, that had less special teams tackles than both emmanuel sanders and antonio brown
