Defending Tebow's faith

What if Tim Tebow were a Muslim?

Imagine for a second, the Denver Broncos quarterback is a devout follower of Islam, sincere and principled in his beliefs and thus bowed toward Mecca to celebrate touchdowns. Now imagine if Detroit Lions players Stephen Tulloch and Tony Scheffler mockingly bowed toward Mecca, too, after tackling him for a loss or scoring a touchdown, just like what happened Sunday.

I know what would happen. All hell would break loose.

Stinging indictments issued by sports columnists. At least a few outraged religious leaders chiming in on his behalf. Depending on what else had happened that day, they might have a chance at becoming Keith Olbermann's Worst Person In The World.

And there would be apologies. Oh, Lord, would there be apologies — by players, by coaches, possibly by ownership with a tiny chance of a statement from NFL commish Roger Goodell.

You cannot mock Muslim faith, not in this country, not anywhere really.

It is primarily a respect issue, because religion is sacred and should be off limits. Yet when Tulloch and Scheffler dropped to a knee to mock how Tebow prays — an action known as “Tebowing” that has gone viral among the public, too — we yawned and told Christians to lighten up. We blamed Tebow for making a show of honoring God rather than himself in moments of joy. We excused them because Tulloch said he was mocking "Tebowing," not God.

Because ridiculing a man who chooses to honor God is so much better, right?

I disagree with Jen's remark that religion should be off limits because it's a sacred issue. Religion doesn't deserve to be protected under the PC rules that diseases like mental retardation or dyslexia should because it's entirely voluntary.

I do sympathize with her remarks about mocking Islam. We have no way of knowing, but I imagine if Tebow we're muslim and his prostration was mocked, the situation would be a lot different, which is unfortunate because of fear.

Now onto the actual incident, I definitely think the Lions' players we're mocking Tebow himself and not the invisible man in the sky he thinks he's talking to. Even if they we're mocking "god" it would still be okay. I'm glad we have a country where people can descry religion and magic and alchemy and astrology without being censured.

If you volunteer to believe in alchemy or religion or astrology, mockery comes with it.

I'm sure he didn't mean being born into a Christian or Muslim family was voluntary...just that the believing in the set values of religions are voluntary.

For example, I was born into a Presbyterian family...but I am agnostic by choice. I could have chosen to be Christian, but I chose not to be.

Timmy wouldn't kneel in mock prayer if he were muslim.....he's not smart enough for figure out which way is Mecca.

Wow, imagine that... a knee-jerk, rightwing fantasy piece about Islam from Fox News. Who could have seen that coming?

Imagine how this country would react if we habitually bombed the shit out of white, Christian nations instead of brownish, Muslim ones. Then talk to me about how underprivileged and downtrodden Christians are.

This probably deserves to be in the Locker Room. I can already smell it.

as a Christian the thing I find offensive about this story is that the writer isn't upset that praying is being mocked, but instead is more interested in attacking some hypothetical pc boogeymen while also trying to enrage people against muslims at the same time.

Perzaktly. I also don't think of Kurt Warner as the embodiment of the Leftist/Communist PC police. If Kurt's telling Timmy to tone it down, it might be for a good reason.
