Steelers won't use Franchise-Tag on Wallace
Last week Steelers G.M. Kevin Colbert said the team is committed to keeping soon-to-be free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace, and the franchise tag was still an option. But now that teams are free to use the franchise tag, the Steelers have reportedly decided against it.
Instead, the Steelers will use the first-round restricted free agent tender, not the franchise tag, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. It’s easy to see why the Steelers wouldn’t use the franchise tag: They’re cap-strapped as it is, and the franchise tag costs about $9.4 million. The first-round restricted free agent tender only costs about $2.7 million. Read more: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com...-mike-wallace/ |
Re: Steelers won'y use Franchise-Tag on Wallace
And they shouldn't use a Franchise Tag on him; why spend $9M on a WR? If his agent feels he's worth that much, let some1 else sign him, take the 1st round pick, see you in the SuperBowl. Wallace is a good receiver; now, is he the same caliber WR such as Jerry Rice, Randy Moss in their Prime? Fitzgerald? And to be honest with you, I don't think neither of those receivers are worth that kind of money. The Steelers do not over pay players at certain positions just because other teams are stupid enough to do so.

Re: Steelers won'y use Franchise-Tag on Wallace
I was concerned when I saw that Wallace could be on another team next year but the more I think about it, the more I think it may actually be a good thing with an extra first rounder. I am never certain wallace will make a catch even when he is open. That doesn't sound like a 9 million dollar investment to me. A 9 million dollar investment is somebody who will get us a first down when we need one (ie: Brown) and not make a few splash plays on first down.
What use is Wallace when our QB is on his back? How many times do you see BB get enough time to properly complete a pass? Brees and Marsha get a lot more time to throw the ball. I would be happy if they spent one of the 2 potential first round picks on a OL. Just my 2 cents |
Re: Steelers won'y use Franchise-Tag on Wallace
Wallace is going nowhere people!! No team is going to give up a first and pay top dollar on top of it. Not even the Gaytriots.

I called it. The FO feels they can move on without him. I agree. Excited about two 1st rd picks for the first time in my life.
