If Hightower is available at 24, is he a no-brainer pick?

I'm not as in-tune with the draft as some of you are (I've kind of lost interest in watching college football over the years due to all the BCS crap), so maybe I can get some opinions on this: if Hightower is there, is he the choice, no questions asked?

I have to say yes. We do need guards, possibly a tackle, maybe a running back, but they can all wait until the second round or later if we have the chance to get a player like this. Our defense has always been built on linebackers, from Lambert/Ham to Lloyd/Kirkland to Farrior/Harrison. We could lock up three-fourths of our linebacking corps for the forseeable future if we get this guy, as well as groom him to become the long-time QB of the defense to replace ol' Potsie.

Woodley/Timmons/Hightower would be a force to be reckoned with for a long time.

he is picking up alot of steam lately and visiting with many teams. there is certainly interest beyond the steelers. in his mock draft, peter king has the ravens trading up with the lions at #23 to select him from under our nose as the successor to ray lewis.

I wouldn't say he's a no-brainer pick, it all depends whether lebeau thinks he will be a good fit in our system. I think OL is a more pressing need, and we may even surprise some people picking mark barron if he's still there, since safety (like LB) will be a position of need possibly very soon.

for all we know, we could possibly be smoke screening to make baltimore trade up past us for someone we didn't have any interest in the first place, it'd be a win for us.

I agree with alot of posters here, OL is a must but if Hightower is available take him if not CB should be #1 priority. We have to remember that Taylor is a starter but the Steelers need someone that can 'play on an island' because of the aggressive nature of the defense and we do not have that with Mundy or Lewis and as in Hockey if a goal tender is having an off game someone needs to be there to take his place, in the Denver game Taylor and Gay were having horrible games and the Steelers had no one to fill that role of 'Reliever' if you will

Kind of a tough question, because we don't know who else is available. If Cordy Glenn is still there, should we pick him? What about Mark Barron? And someone always falls, and in this case it might be Keuchly. If it comes down to a choice between Hightower, Adams, and Martin, with all of the above off the board along with the corners, I think its Hightower. But ya never know.

I dont think we are really looking for a CB, they drafted two last year that are supposed to be pretty good.

I couldn't have said it better myself. :drink:

you cannot answer that question without knowing who else is still available. what if OGs David DeCastro or Cordy Glenn drop to the Steelers? or how about S Mark Barron or NT Dontari Poe? those are all positions of need also...

As others have said, I certainly wouldn't characterize it as a no-brainer. I think there are some legitimate concerns about him, such as his coverage skills. Some describe him as a borderline first rounder, which is not always great when you're picking at #24. It would be great if they could trade down and still get him.

Hightower is a born Steeler, as said by draft analysts...a perfect match....if he's available, we'll absolutely take him, i'd be shocked if we didn't.
Only problem is, in the last week, others have noticed just how great he could be too and has been rising up the charts...he's on fire. I thought it would be a sure pick, but i'm now having doubts if he'll even be available come our turn.

Hightower, Glenn, Barron.......any of them will help us.
BPA and needs may match up after all.
