Are the Steelers missing their leaders?

Are the Steelers missing their leaders?

The Steelers have struggled on the road this season and won their only home game with ease. Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu noted that this is different from the 2005 team, which thrived on playing away from home by taking the "11 guys against everyone else" mindset.

Why doesn't this Steelers team have that personality? "We don't have Hines [Ward], we don't have James Farrior, we don't have Aaron Smith," Polamalu told 105.9 the X in Pittsburgh. "That's the core leadership that we've had since I've been here."

In my assessment, the Steelers aren't missing their leaders. They're missing their playmakers.

When Polamalu and linebacker James Harrison played in the same game, the Steelers are 23-7 (.766) since the start of the 2009 season. When one is sidelined or both are out, Pittsburgh is 11-10 (.523). Not surprisingly, Pittsburgh is better when the two former NFL Defensive Players of the Year are on the field together.

Asked about the impact of the return of himself and Harrison, Polamalu told the radio station: "I don't know. We'll see. There's some other new faces who have become permanent starters. So it's all about how all 11 players can mesh together."

Well Ward brings less than nothing to this offense. Last I checked he didnt play Defense. Also, Wrd didn;t practise at all with the team last year, so hearing him potentially say, lets step it up guys, and cheer on the sideline when your standings there doesn't have much of an impact.

Aaron Smith? Whats there to say, leadership starts with being on the field. He wasn't on the field.

Farrior, I'll give him that one. But if he cant play up to the caliber needed you can't just keep everyone so they can stand around?

Perhaps Troy should workout better, stretch more etc so he isn't hurt. The players all wanted less training camp, less preseason games. Now they make excuses because there are new faces and they have to "mesh". Shut up Troy and do you job!

Nah, they have leaders. Those leaders need some of the younger guys to follow them instead of acting like they're pro-bowlers.

i couldnt disagree with you more.

people are quick to blame cowher for the 2006 8-8 meltdown (in a season we finished 6-2) for having "carolina on his mind",

those same people discount the losses of jerome bettis, von oelhoffen, randle-el. all three were very strong leaders. sure randle-el was never a fantasy stud, but the steelers were in the SB the last 2 years he was with the team.

jerome was a bench role player just like ward was last season, yet ben promised him a ring in 2004 if he would come back for 1 more year.

you dont coach that, and you certainly put a price on that or measure it in statistics.

as for troy, no other active safety has played in as many or won as many rings as him. you have to go all the way back to ronnie lot to find a safety as decorated as him. he was a league MVP which i dont think ronnie lott (or any safety) has ever done. for the first time in his career, he passed on his offseason training regimen in CA with marinovich to be with his team and show leadership and help the younger players learn in non-mandatory work outs and camps.

i'd say he's done "his job"

Are Steelers dealing with lack of leadership?

Is there a leadership void on a Steelers defense that hasnít been intact since the middle of last season?

Troy Polamalu wonít say there is, but he gave an interesting answer when asked to assess this teamís personality.

ďWe donít have guys like James Farrior and Aaron Smith, the core leadership since Iíve been here,Ē he said.

Farrior, the longtime defensive captain and inside linebacker, and Smith retired after last season. Smith missed most of the previous three seasons with injuries, but the Steelers still havenít effectively replaced a multi-skilled defensive end who was adept at pass rushing and stopping the run.

One problem: Stars Polamalu, James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley have played together only once in the past 15 games. The Steelers were 19-6 when Harrison and Polamalu both played the past two seasons and 14-5 when Harrison, Polamalu and Woodley all played.
