Could we still be a contender if...

We lost the following players? There's a lot of buzz right now about players not being Steelers next year (mostly speculation though)

Hampton
Keisel
Wallace
Mendenhall
Foote
Lewis
Colon
Starks
Harrison

I'm all for the infusion of youth, but losing a lot of veterans last year left a bit of a leadership void this year. If we lost most of these players, would it be too much of a hit all at once to stay competitive?

We lose all those players might as well call it a rebuilding year...

I agree, but I think some will be gone. I'm just wondering which are let go because of age/wear & tear, and which ones the FO will try hard to keep. Lewis is probably the most obvious of the bunch

I'm hoping that we can keep starks even if gilbert is expected to be the starting LT, for depth, but less optimistic that we can get him on the cheap for much longer since he's been playing awesome. mendenhall might be able to stay on the cheap because his comeback year was a disaster. colon is great when he's healthy, but his durability is a question mark. not to mention the penalties, he's basically another chris kemoeatu (who is much better at pass blocking though)

wallace is as good as gone. if he didn't punch his ticket already in the first 15 games, his decision to sit out in the final game was the nail in the coffin, cares about himself more than the team and the steeler FO doesn't want players like that.

keisel / hampton / harrison have all been total beasts in their tenure, unfortunately, NFL players have a shelf life and all have been declining. they may have 1-2 more years, but at what cost? and at that cost, does it help or hurt the team more?

foote is serviceable, not a pro bowl player, but can be brought back without breaking the bank if spence isn't ready to go.

Player cut :: replaced by

Hampton :: McClendon/Ta'amu
Mendenhall :: Dwyer/Redman
Foote :: Spence
Colon :: Foster

I think that these guys come back, but if not...

Starks :: Gilbert
Wallace :: Sanders
Keisel :: Heyward

This one I hope comes back; he was looking good towards the end (when healed), and he would be difficult to simply "replace"...

Harrison :: rookie/Worilds/Carter

Lastly, Lewis WILL be back.

We would ne a bad ass of a draft to be something that year.

Of those, i see all these going:
Mendenhall for sure
Wallace
Hampton
Foote

It will be interesting to see what, if anything we do with the Colon/Foster thing. I couldn't even guess right now. I'm sure the FO will surprise us with that one.
I think the FO is going to send more than a couple big shockers out there to deer-in-headlights Steeler fans.

if we lost all of them, definitely. No telling what the FO is going to do.

Letting Wallace walk should save enough money to retain one or two of those vets, most of whom probably won't be in high demand except by desperate teams.

Not all of them. In Mendenhall, Colon (he's good but he never plays anyway), and Hampton we're not losing much at all, as Dwyer and Mclendon were both more productive and Foster was perfectly fine and has played more recently anyway. Harrison and Keisel have possible replacements lined up but it may take a year for Heyward and Worilds to adjust to being full-time starters. I think I would trust Allen to step up in the event Lewis was let go, but at the same time if THAT many players were released I would sure as hell hope Lewis could be re-signed.

Wallace's production, as much as I hate to admit, will be hard to replace, even after this off-year for him. He gets TDs, plain and simple, not many others do. I'm expecting him to leave but I think his absence will be more noticeable than many are expecting. There is NO reason for Starks to not return unless HE chooses to retire. He's earned the starting LT position and quite honestly I'd be insulted if I were him how every offseason plays out for him recently. He's done nothing but be consistently reliable and I'm not ready to just give that job to Gilbert yet. I'm still assuming Foote will be replaced in this draft, and hopefully Spence could play well for him if not.

We can lose a lot of people and still be a contender, but not everybody. We need to keep one of Lewis/Foote and one of Keisel/Harrison depending on who we draft, and IMO Starks NEEDS to be kept.

Re: Could we still be a contender if...

If we could keep 2 of those, still reasonable to expect to contend

If I had my wish - keep 4 on that list

Keisel - got better as season wore on I thought - still has another season left to give IMO
Foote (we contended with an "old" Farrior after all - Foote still has some left to give I think)
Lewis - I absolutely want him back, not sure how much that would mean to leadership though except for by example
- Starks - the only guy out of the offense I really want to stay

Although, I could see one or the other from Mendy, Wallace staying. Who knows. If all of those are gone - I'd say rebuilding - UNLESS, Ben ups it, and UNLESS Brown ups it, and UNLESS someone on D-line/LB corp ups it - meaning their focus and commitment.
