It really just boils down to city mentality. People in the stix know how to get by without power and going to the grocery store for a few days to a couple weeks. People in large cities just assume what was there for them before a disaster will automatically be there immediately afterwards, and they (for the most part) have no sense of planning ahead.
My brother is in Brooklyn near prospect park. He's fine. It's amazing the difference a mile makes there.
