The NFL does a poor job assessing penalties for on-the-field conduct but a good job of assessing penalties for off-the-field conduct. I am impressed that the NFL puts all the player transgressions on their own website for the world to see. The NFL certainly does not sweep stories under the rug to protect the shield- they accept criticism head on and hold players accountable for their actions.
Crabtree's story was on the home page of the NFL website immediately after it happened. If you recall Ben was not suspended the
first time he was accused of sexual assault. If the charges do not stick Crabtree will not be suspended either.
If Crabtree is not found guilty in the court of law there is no need for the NFL to suspend him. If he is found guilty he will probably be playing on a team lead by Paul Crewe.
