I believe the interpretation that states that Jesus was telling his followers that they would have to defend THEMSELVES in the future was correct- not that they had to defend Jesus.
Similarly, in the excerpt from Matthew you cited the followers were not to interfere with the prophesies by which Jesus had to be martyred. Jesus' death was God's will and the salvation of mankind... if you believe that sort of thing.
How do you rationalize Exodus 22-2 2 “If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed."
Could that fatal blow be delivered with a .357 Magnum? Does it matter what the fatal blow is dealth with?
