My favorite Tony Gwynn story:

Greg Maddox was talking about "change ups", and why they are the most effective pitches. Maddox said that a person can see the spin of a curve ball, or watch the hands for a knuckle ball, and so on & so forth for every pitch... except the change up. Maddox averred that a change up has no "give away."

He explained why, using an analogy. If you watch a car in the distance, unless there you know the speed of another car around it, there's no way to gauge if it's traveling at 70mph or 90mph. Thus, "a good change up will fool every batter... every single batter...
...except for Tony Gwynn."
