HOLD ON: Mike Barr, who is competing with Chris Gardocki for the punting job, held for Jeff Reed during a field goal drill on Monday afternoon at St. Vincent College. Barr has held for Reed in practice previously, but not in the Steelers' first two preseason games. Gardocki also holds on place kicks. With Barr accepting the snaps this time, Reed connected from 20, 35, 46 and 50 yards away.
HOLD ON, PART II: Defensive end Brett Keisel retreated briefly to a portable toilet located in a corner of the practice area, only to find it occupied. Keisel patiently waited his turn.
DOH!: Wide receiver Santonio Holmes muffed a punt. Cornerback Bryant McFadden dropped an interception.
ROLE REVERSAL: Tyrone Carter and Ryan Clark continued to trade places at starting free safety. Carter was back with the first team on Monday afternoon after Carter started Saturday night's preseason game against Minnesota.
GIVE AND TAKE: Cornerback Deshea Townsend picked off quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in 7-on-7 drills. A few moments later, Roethlisberger hit wide receiver Cedrick Wilson in front of Townsend.
HIGH STANDARD: Coach Bill Cowher was emphatic that his players come off the ball and hit during a 9-on-7 running game drill "every time. "That's who we are," Cowher announced. "Not every other one or two out of three, three out of three."
HIGH STANDARD, PART II: Roethlisberger chastised himself before overthrowing wide receiver Quincy Morgan, hollering "ahhh, get it down," upon releasing the ball.
SCRAPPIN': Rookie free agent Scott Paxson and first-year guard Tim Brown got into a scuffle during 11-on-11 work. Paxson lost his helmet in the otherwise uneventful disagreement.
GO LONG: Roethlisberger pump-faked and then found tight end Heath Miller for a long touchdown at the expense of linebacker James Farrior during 11-on-11 work on the Steelers' no-huddle offense
