It's ridiculous. Would you rather play a team that beat you once, or a team that you beat twice.
People say it's like a coin toss - it doesn't matter what happened in the first two tries, but that's not correct. A coin toss assumes complete equality. Beating a team both times you met them means that it isn't equal.
