Will Bruce Davis make the cut?
Steelers Q&A with Ed Bouchette
Monday, August 10, 2009
Linebacker Bruce Davis gives the offense his crazy eye during seven-on-seven drills earlier this training camp.
Q:It's been mentioned several times that second year players Rashard Mendenhall and Limas Sweed have made good impressions so far this camp. But another player in year No. 2 that we are hoping to stand out and look promising for the future is LB Bruce Davis. As of now, does he look like a contributor or a cut? Thanks!
Jeff George, Oklahoma City, Okla.
BOUCHETTE: Unfortunately for Davis and the Steelers, he has not done enough through the first week of training camp to make anyone's head turn. They drafted him in the third round in 2008 after he accumulated 25.5 sacks in his final two seasons at UCLA. There is a crying need for a backup outside linebacker or two, so the opportunity for him and others is there. Davis has not yet grasped that opportunity, but he'll get his real chance during the four preseason games. I cannot say if he'll be cut or not, but I can say the coaches would like to see more from him and soon.
