PITTSBURGH, PA —
It was over when...
with just under 1 minute left to play and the Carolina Panthers advancing into Steeler territory trailing by 2 points, William Gay picked off a ill attempt pass and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown to put the game away 29-20.
Jon Beason had 8 tackles 1 sack and a forced fumble... James Harrison had 9 tackles and 2 sacks... Ben Roethlisberger threw for 203 yards completed 14 of his 18 passes and threw two touchdowns.
In what was thoroughly a defensive struggle for much of the first half in rainy conditions the Steelers drew first blood but missed the extra point, the Steelers punted a season high 8 times as the Panthers struggled to get back into the game but after some special teams play by Dez Bryant they gained two field goals before half time.
The second half began with the Steelers driving to Panthers territory but stalling for a field goal, this was all crossed out as Dez Bryant returned a kickoff for a touchdown putting them up 10-9. It got worse as James Farrior was carted off with a broken thumb allowing DeAngelo Williams who was ineffective when Farrior was on the field to be effective, He plowed in 20 yards in one series and capped it off with an 8 yard touchdown run, The Steelers look dumbstruck as the Panthers pushed the lead to 20-9 just before the end of the third quarter, but Ben Roethlisberger drove down the field fast and connected with Heath Miller in the endzone putting the Steelers back into the game.
With just 1 minute and 29 seconds left Lones Seiber kicked his 3rd Field Goal of the night to put them up 22-20 but the Panthers sealed their fate when they threw deep ball in moonsoon like conditions perfectly into the hands of William Gay who returned his 5th interception of the season.
Whilst Rolando McClain replaced James Farrior, he recorded 5 tackles and 1 sack, James Harrison equaled his Franchise record he set in 2008 with getting his 16 sack of the season.
Ryan Clark layed out Dez Bryant ending his promising night.
James Farrior is listed as doubtful with a Broken Thumb against the #2 ranked Defensive side New York Jets. Darrelle Revis has only allowed 3 catches this season.
