Default Re: Toronto/Calgary Trade

The Leafs did end up landing Giguere...they sent Jason Blake and Vesa Toskala to the Ducks for him.

I'm not sure what to make of the Leafs/Flames deal. Dion Phaneuf has really been a disappointment the last 2 seasons, even more so this season, didn't get along with Brent Sutter, and the Flames desperately needed some scoring depth to make a push for the playoffs. Matt Stajan will be immediately inserted on the top line with Jarome Iginla, and Niklas Hagman will give them some scoring depth on the 2nd line. Ian White is the kind of gritty defenseman that Sutter likes and he'll get a lot of the ice time that Phaneuf got. And Jamal Mayers will bring more toughness to an already tough lineup. Brian Burke loves physical defensemen, and when he is on his game, Phaneuf definitely provides that. The Leafs did trade away pretty much all of their scoring (and thank God Blake is in the West now - that guy has KILLED the Pens over the years), but they still have Kessel, Ponikarovsky, Grabovski, a couple of young, up-and-coming forwards, and if Phaneuf gets back to his Norris Trophy candidate form from a couple years ago, that will make the deal better for Toronto.

As for the Ducks trade, obviously Blake was thrown into the deal so that Burke would agree to take Giguere and his $7 million salary off the Ducks' hands. Jonas Hiller got a new contract yesterday, guaranteeing him the #1 job, so you knew Giguere would eventually be dealt.

Look for the Leafs to trade Tomas Kaberle either by the deadline or this summer for some scoring help. Phaneuf coming to TO makes him expendable.
