Rookie center Mark Letestu said his surgically repaired left knee has healed to the point that playing this weekend for the Penguins is not "out of the question."
Letestu, who hasn't played since Jan. 25, has been cleared by team doctors to "once I feel I'm ready." He will not play tonight against the San Jose Sharks at Consol Energy Center.
Letestu, who has scored 10 goals, was injured during a morning practice on Feb. 1 at Madison Square Garden, where his left skate blade caught a rut in the ice.
He had surgery about a week later and the team prognosis for recover was between four and six weeks.
"It's been 18 days today," he said, "and I don't feel (discomfort in the left knee) anymore."
Letestu said he will skate Thursday even if the Penguins cancel practice, and that his objective is to start taking contact then or Friday during a morning practice before a game at Carolina.
He did not rule out playing at Carolina or Saturday night at Toronto.
"Next week," he said of the latest possible time frame for his return. "I don't doubt it. That's a modest goal."
