I'm not sure if it still does, but the WWE used to bill itself as sports-entertainment. It's clearly not a true sport since everything, including who wins, is scripted. But there's certainly a lot of athleticism involved.
Pro wrestling also used to be referred to as a "soap opera" for men. There are story lines, feuds, love angles, good guys and bad guys, etc.
So essentially, it's scripted entertainment involving talented athletes. If I had to compare it to anything, I'd compare it to a circus.
As to why anyone would waste their time on it, it's like any form of entertainment ... some people get it and love it, and some don't.
