Default What is Steeler Football................................

I personally think Steeler football is winning, with few if any reloading years. From some of the posts I have read I think some mean "imposing our will" "running more than passing". I have read that we need to score more to help the defense. Well I have composed some numbers from three eras of Steeler football and I will let you discuss.

Coach year games pts/scored avg pts/allowed avg record
Noll 1974 14 305 21.8 189 13.5 10-3-1
Noll 1975 14 373 26.6 162 11.6 12-2
Noll 1976 14 342 24.4 138 9.9 10-4
Noll 1977 14 283 20.2 243 17.4 9-5
Noll 1978 16 356 22.3 195 12.2 14-2
Noll 1979 16 416 26.0 262 16.4 12-4
(23.6) (13.5) 67-20-1 .761

Cowher 1992 16 299 18.7 225 14.1 11-5
Cowher 1995 16 407 25.4 327 20.4 11-5
Cowher 1997 16 372 23.3 307 19.2 11-5
Cowher 2000 16 321 20.0 255 15.9 9-7
Cowher 2005 16 389 24.3 258 16.0 11-5
Cowher 2006 16 353 22.1 223 13.9 8-8
(22.3) (16.9) 61-35 .635

Tomlin 2007 16 393 24.6 227 14.2 10-6
Tomlin 2008 16 347 21.7 232 14.5 12-4
Tomlin 2009 16 368 23.0 324 20.3 9-7
Tomlin 2010 16 375 23.4 223 13.9 12-4
Tomlin 2011 16 325 20.3 269 16.8 12-4
(22.6) (15.9) 55-25 .688

All right I pick the years 74-79 Four SuperBowl Victories, Arguably the greatest team of all time they had it all. O- Line, QB , RBs, WRs, D-Line, LBers , and secondary and coach Noll Stats speak for themselfs. A different era that let you play real defense like real men. I believe the 76 or 77 season Bradshaw was hurt a lot.

Cowher I hand picked and I will tell you how. First I took both years he took his team to the SuperBowl, then I picked the years that include the four highest rushers in Steeler history. BTW those years did not coincide with the SuperBowl years. His highest scoring year was 1995 and Neil O'Donnell led the team.

Tomlin I took his tenure as it is.

Now I have already mentioned that I believe the league has made it a scoring league since the 70's and somewhat from Cowhers time to now. But if you noticed higher scoring avg. does not correlate to a better record, and even defense does not if you look close. Exp. 1976 We scored at a 24.4 clip and gave up a measly 9.9, yet we finished 10-4 and did not advance to the Superbowl that year.

Tomlins Steelers scored 23 points per game in 2009 and the defense gave up 20 points a game resulting in Tomlins worst year so far at 9-7.

In 2006 Cowher had FWP and he turned in one othe top four rushing performances in Steeler history they also scored 22.1 ppg and gave up a very respectable 13.9 yet we finished 8-8. SuperBowl hangover, Bens injury, Cowher in limbo all factors, but we had the rushing and the scoring and the defense. How do you explain the record.

Finally is you compare avg, over these periods they fall Noll 23.6 ppg .761 win pct.
Tomlin 22.6 ppg .688 win pct. and Cowher 22.3 ppg and .635 win pct.

Now I ask you is Steeler football Scoring or Rushing or do we seem to depend on the defense too much? I think Steeler football is winning. But I think some of us look at the new version of the Steelers and think they are much worse than they really are both in scoring and winning.
