Police took a man into custody Monday after "multiple people" were shot near Texas A&M University, a police official said.

Several law enforcement officers were among the people shot, Rhonda Seaton of the College Station Police Department told CNN. She didn't have information on how many people were shot or their conditions.

She said a person identified as the gunman was in custody. The shooting happened about one block from campus, Seaton said.

Officer Jon Agnew with the Bryan Police Department said at least one civilian had been injured. Bryan is adjacent to College Station.

Police are still at the scene making "sure there aren't multiple suspects," Officer Jason James of the Bryan Police Department said.

James said the first call was that an officer was down and shots had been fired.
After the initial report, the university warned people to stay away from the intersection of Welborn Road and George Bush Drive as well as part of Fidelity Drive in College Station, Texas.

Texas A&M University reports on its website that an "active shooter" is in custody in the area of the school. At least two people apparently have been injured, according to local media.

The university, located in College Station, Texas, about 90 miles northwest of Houston, initially reported the shooter at 1:29 p.m. ET, and reported 15 minutes later that he was in custody. The university immediately issued a Code Maroon on its emergency website, instructing students and school personnel to avoid the area.

Update at 2:35 p.m. ET: The shooting incident occurred a few blocks off campus, Texas A & M University spokeswoman Sherylon Carroll tells USA TODAY's Donna Leinwand Leger.

Carroll says she learned of the shooting from the campus police chief who asked her to alert students, faculty and staff to avoid the area. Within 15 minutes, police called to say the shooter was in custody, Carroll says.

"We are OK now," Carroll says. "For a while, it was scary."

Update at 2:33 p.m. ET:The Eagle, the College Station newspaper, reports that the incident appears to have started on Fidelity Street near George Bush Dr., not far from the A&M Former Student's Association building.

Other media reports say the shooter apparently had barricaded himself into a building.

Update at 2:27 p.m. ET: KBTX reports it has confirmed that more than one law enforcement officer had been wounded.

KBTX quotes a spokesperson for the College Station Police Department as saying there were no confirmed fatalities.

"The scene is reportedly under control and there is no longer a danger to the public," KBTX report.

Update at 2:22 p.m. ET: The College Station newspaper, The Eagle, reports that police scanners referred to two officers being wounded, but that was not immediately confirmed. (Correction at 2:56 p.m. ET: We earlier wrongly referred to the Eagle as the school newspaper.)

Update at 2:18 p.m. ET: KHOU.com reports that at least two people were shot. KHOU reports that police say the suspect was firing shots from a house near the campus.

Update at 2:14 p.m. ET: Police officer Seaton, in her interview with CNN, said she did not know at this time the extent of the injuries .

Update at 2:12 p.m. ET: Brazos County police scanners report at least two people "are down."

Update at 2:11 p.m. ET: College Station, Texas, police officer Rhonda Seaton tells CNN that the "multiple people" have been injured.

Update at 2:06 p.m. ET: Here is the university's initial report on its website:

Avoid Area. CSPD reports an active shooter in the area immediately southeast of the intersection of Welborn Rd and George Bush Drive. Please avoid the area. Residents in the immediate area need to remain inside their residence.

No futher details were immediately available.

At least two people are dead after a shooting incident near the Texas A&M campus in College Station, Texas.

During a televised press conference, Assistant Chief Scott McCollum said a police officer and a civilian were killed during the shooting. McCollum said the alleged gunman was also shot, but he is now in custody.

The (Bryan-College Station) Eagle reports that at least five people were taken to the hospital, "but it wasn't known if all were gunshot victims."

"Texas A&M released a Code Maroon warning at 12:29 p.m. advising all students, staff and members of the public to avoid the area ... and to stay inside if they lived on Fidelity Street," The Eagle reported. "A second warning was issued at 12:44 stating the shooter was in custody, but people should continue to avoid the area."

We'll have more on this story as it develops.

Update at 3:57 p.m. ET. Constable Killed:

The Houston Chronicle reports that it was Constable Brian Bachmann, an elected official, who was killed.

The paper reports that Bachmann was the first officer on the scene but it is not clear what brought him there.

He shot a cop trying to serve him an eviction notice.

it wasn't another "rampage"

meanwhile, over 40 people were shot in the city of Chicago over Memorial Day Weekend of this year, and that city has the strictest gun laws on the books...but they were mostly black on black, so not newsworthy

Or maybe Congress can pass a statute or the White House can put out an executive order with guidelines as to when a multi-death shooting supports lowering the flag to half-staff.

I saw the flag at half-staff last week and thought maybe someone famous had died, but someone else guessed it was for the shootings at the Sikh temple - they were correct. The flag also was lowered when The Joker shot up the theater in Colorado.

So is the test number of victims, location, or whether a particular class of individuals gets shot?

Atlanta has multi-death "home invasion" shootings (aka drug deals gone bad) all the time and the flag never gets lowered.
