Within 25 minutes of being alerted to the attack against the diplomatic mission, half a dozen C.I.A. officers raced there from their base about a mile away, enlisting the help of a handful of Libyan militia fighters as they went. Arriving at the mission about 25 minutes after that, the C.I.A. officers joined State Department security agents in a futile search through heavy smoke and enemy fire for Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens before evacuating the mission’s personnel to the apparent safety of their base, ...

“The officers on the ground in Benghazi responded to the situation on the night of 11 and 12 September as quickly and as effectively as possible,” one of the senior intelligence officials told reporters.

Thursday’s briefing for reporters was intended to refute reports, including one by Fox News last Friday, that the C.I.A.’s chain of command had blocked the officers on the ground from responding to the mission’s calls for help.

“There were no orders to anybody to stand down in providing support,” the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of continuing investigations by the State Department and the F.B.I.

At a time when the circumstances surrounding the attack on the Benghazi compound have emerged as a major political issue, with Republicans criticizing the Obama administration’s handling of the episode, the senior official also sought to rebut reports that C.I.A. requests for support from the Pentagon that night had gone unheeded.

In fact, the official said, the military diverted a Predator drone from a reconnaissance mission in Darnah, 90 miles away, in time to oversee the mission’s evacuation. The two commandos, based at the embassy in Tripoli, joined the reinforcements. And a military transport plane flew the wounded Americans and Mr. Stevens’s body out of Libya.

Donald Trump took $5 million in charitable donations off the table on Thursday as his self-proclaimed "very, very big" offer for President Obama's college records expired with a whimper.
Trump had offered to donate the cash to a charity of Obama’s choice if the president coughed up all of his school and passport records. His deadline for the offer expired at noon without comment by the Obama campaign.

Trump said Thursday that if Obama had accepted his offer, $5 million "could have provided substantial aid to a variety of great causes, including the victims of Hurricane Sandy.”

The President last year released his long-form birth certificate, from Hawaii, in an effort to end speculation he might have been born outside the U.S.

But Trump claimed Thursday that Obama’s silence meant only one thing:
“Obviously he wasn’t born in this country or, if he was, he said he wasn’t in order to receive financial aid and in order to have a clear and very easy path into a college or university. Only a very stupid person would believe otherwise.”

Some folks think it is time to move on from the storm

Won’t Somebody Please Consider the People Who Were Unaffected by the Storm?


We mustn't overlook the forgotten victims of this disaster: The people who were really pumped to go trick-or-treating last Wednesday, only to have the holiday needlessly rescheduled by Governor Chris Christie to tonight. Suzanne Carson of Mullica Hill speaks for the oppressed in a letter to the editor of the South Jersey Times:

I am was very displeased with Gov. Chris Christie’s Executive Order to delay Halloween to Monday (Nov. 5). I am also displeased with our local governments for bowing so quickly without seeing what was best for their specific towns ...

Never before have I felt the presence of the government in my home as loudly as I did on Oct. 31. I found it very contradictory to the motto of our country. I did not feel free.

Was it not Patrick Henry who declared, "Give me candy at the regularly scheduled time, or give me death"? It was. And aside from undermining the nation's founding principles, the whole postponement thing was a hassle like you couldn't imagine. First Halloween was one day, then it was a whole different day.

My two children, ages 5 and 8, know there was a hurricane, know that we were safe and sound inside our house, and know that we are back to business as usual in our area. As the storm progressed and phone calls came in, our Halloween plans changed daily. Waking up on Halloween morning we had a plan in place. By afternoon I had to tell my children of new plans, again.

Obviously, having to wait a few extra days to walk around and get free candy from neighbors was a traumatic experience for the children. But it was also a learning experience, because now they understand that The Government does stuff sometimes, or something:

My children learned a lesson about government. They learned that there are people in power who have the ability to make decisions that directly affect them. Many will say that our children will forget once they get their night out, but I don’t agree. As they grow older, and become adults, they will remember this as the Halloween that wasn’t.

And on their death beds, they will whisper, with their last breaths of life, "If only Halloween had been held on time eighty years ago. If only ..."
