Default Kelly in Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns are closing in on getting their man.

Oregon coach Chip Kelly is close to a deal to become the Browns’ next head coach, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network is reporting.

Kelly has been the most talked-about coaching candidate in the NFL and was believed to have interviews lined up today with the Eagles and Bills as well as the Browns. He was widely regarded to be the top choice of Browns owner Jimmy Haslam, and Haslam was reportedly willing to spend whatever it would take to acquire Kelly.

We’ve seen in recent days that the deals that are close don’t always get done, and Kelly hasn’t been hired yet. But it appears that the Browns are the leading suitors for a hot coaching candidate whose unconventional approach has worked wonders in college and is now ready to try his system in the NFL

He might be the next Bill Belichick. We'll see.
Belichick is friendly with Chip and apparently a lot of this year's one word super-no-huddle rushing attack came with a lot of input from Chip Kelly.

I think this is a good move for the Browns if they do it with long term goals in mind. Give them a few years and maybe Cleveland will get its Superbowl.

Don't like this hire at all, and not just because its the browns. Coaches from college going to the NFL typically flop if they have no NFL experience. The ones that transition well have coached in the NFL before going to college

Chip Kelly to meet with the Eagles today

1/5/2013 8:14:21 AM

Oregon coach Chip Kelly and the Cleveland Browns wrapped up seven hours of meetings Friday that were characterized as "very positive," though Kelly informed the Browns that he would proceed to interview with the Buffalo Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports. This according to team and league sources.

Kelly interviewed for five hours with Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner before they took a break and had a two-hour dinner. The sides agreed to talk again Saturday night after Kelly's interviews with the Bills later Friday night and the Eagles on Saturday. The Bills announced late Friday that they had interviewed Kelly.

While sources say Kelly has positioned himself as the favorite to become the next Browns coach, there is no contractual agreement in place. However, the two sides see no significant obstacles that would prevent a contract being completed if they decide to move forward Saturday night, the sources added.

Kelly informed Haslam and Banner that he wanted to "go through the process" by meeting with the Bills and Eagles, something he regretted not doing last hiring season when he only interviewed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to a source close to the Oregon coach.

Haslam and Banner did not object to Kelly's wishes to meet with those teams.

According to league sources, the Eagles were flying from Philadelphia to Arizona on Saturday morning to interview Kelly. Sources said Kelly gave the Eagles his word he would meet with them.

Report: Colt McCoy has been told he’s in Chip Kelly’s plans

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 4, 2013

Chip Kelly may be creating a quarterback controversy in Cleveland before he even gets the job.

With the Browns reportedly getting close to finishing a deal to bring Kelly from Oregon to Cleveland, a report from ESPNCleveland.com suggests that Kelly may like Colt McCoy, the 2010 third-round pick who started 21 games in his first two seasons, better than Brandon Weeden, the 2012 first-round pick who started 15 games as a rookie.

According to the report, Browns CEO Joe Banner told McCoy he is “in the next head coach’s plans.”

Of course, there are a lot of caveats here. For starters, Kelly has been spending his time coaching Oregon and watching tape of the Ducks’ Fiesta Bowl opponent, Kansas State. He hasn’t been watching tape of McCoy, Weeden or anyone else on the Browns. So any opinion he has about either quarterback is extremely preliminary. And even if Kelly did have plans for McCoy, those plans could change if McCoy struggled to pick up Kelly’s offense in minicamps, training camp or the preseason.

The reality is that we have no idea who the Browns’ quarterback will be this year. Maybe it will be Weeden, maybe it will be McCoy, maybe it will be a rookie the Browns draft, or maybe it will be a veteran the Browns acquire through a trade or free agency. But this much is clear: If Kelly is going to make this thing work, he’s going to need a quarterback who can run his offense. And just a year after the Browns selected Weeden in the first round of the draft, there are real questions about whether Weeden can be that quarterback.
