there were reportedly quite a few witnesses and most likely an admission by Rainey...

not necessarily. Rainey already scares teams with his teeny size and the threat of him literally being broken in half each time he's hit. The threat of injury is large.
And thats without this incident now hanging over him.

I am willing to take heat on this so here goes. If this was a proven star this would not have been dealt with in such swift fashion. I am sure the FO weighed his past seasons contribution and this incident (a simple assault, more than likely probation even in light of a previous incident) along with his past and decided to part ways and get out of a contract that they are having second thoughts about. I for one would not be surprised if they do not bring him back later at a lesser contract if he clears waivers. Business is business.

Rainey is a versatile back, which is why the Steelers drafted him. He can catch passes out of the backfield, and he's quick. As he developed he could have been very productive as a catch-and-run back in the Todd Haley offense. Some team will get a fairly talented running back for free. It's a shame he won't get the opportunity to wear the Steeler striped throwback uniform anymore. It seemed to suit him pretty well..

those are very good points. I never really considered that we'd see him back as a steelers. But as you say, business is business, and the Steelers do what they can to sell tickets and keep winning.

Last time I checked the Rooneys signed his check not Pouncey
