Steelers need some of that heart and character back. No one has filled the shoes that have left the team.

I remember Bettis being a great stabilizing force in the huddle. And Hines always played with tremendous heart.

The intangibles are what push you over the top.

This is definitely true, but I also think in today's salary-cap, parity situation one of the most important things is getting through the season reasonably healthy and especially being healthy for the playoffs. Looking at our run this year, even someone like McGahee and then the injury to Moreno made a difference, then Gronk, Talib, Ridley.

Looking back at the Steelers season, I mean you cannot say enough about how losing Ben hurts. And players rarely come back in the first game completely ready to go. I was really shocked at how badly Batch played in his first game, I was used to seeing that guy get the job done. I also think this was one of those years where you guys just kind of hit an ebb, I expect the Steelers to be noticeably better next year. But, again, for either team to make a run will probably also come down to getting healthy at the right time.

All true, but all part of the game.

The Ravens lost Suggs, Webb and Lewis (and others) for long stretches and have still made it to the Lombardi-defining game.

Sometimes injuries are a fine excuse and all, but great teams win no matter what.

They also lost 4 of their last 5 games, they didn't start winning again until these players were back and healthy. They didn't overcome these injuries, they were awful while these guys were hurt.

very true. A huge part is putting it all together and peaking at the right time. It's not even so much about who's the best throughout the season, but who's the best at the right time.

Yeah, I, too, thought that the Ravens played like crap most of the season (especially down the stretch).

However, they outplayed the Broncos and the Pats when it mattered and without question (injuries or not). Mad props for doing so.

In most cases the injury excuse just seems lame or lazy. You either win or you don't.

Maybe the Steelers could have won a game or two more with a few key healthy players, but they still could have without. It's a teams fault for not executing, with or without a player or players.

It's not common, but you gotta give it up to a team when it does happen.
