Default Mock Draft

Already, I get to be Kevin here so this is what I do. First and foremost, I would sign Victor Butler to compete with Worlids and have some depth at OLB. I would trade down to the 49ers for an extra 2nd. Keep in mind if Ansah is available at 17, I pull the trigger on him.

1. Zach Ertz, TE Stanford

I am sure not many people would see this coming but it provides two things for us, it replaces Miller until he is fully healthy and gives us a threat in the passing game. This would also be a great time to find Millers ultimate replacement as he is getting up there in age (although still playing excellent football).

2. Matt Elam, S, Florida

Unfortunately we can not rely on Troy staying healthy. He would be a great understudy to Troy. Please also note that I think highly of Golden as well and really think he can become something for us.

2 (from Niners) La'Veon Bell, RB. Michigan State

I do not take the chance of him falling to us in the 3rd. I really did not think much of this kid until I saw his highlight real. Absolutely LOVE the way this kid runs and unlike Mendenhall, it sounds like this kid has something to prove and WANTS to play.

3. Kiko Alonso, ILB, Oregon

Always around the ball.

4. Gerald Hodges, OLB, Penn State.

Adds another pass rusher to the roster.

I do not know enough to draft the latter rounds but I think this would be a pretty good start. I know this doesnt address the WR position but we just have too many dang needs. I really hope we pickup Heyward-Bey and give him another shot....

Like your draft selections:

Here is another thought pattern.

Kenny Vaccaro- S-Texas (OK w/Austin, Rhoades, Jesse Wms, Eifert)
I see no picks at 17 w/out some issues, must hit on #1, thatís why Iím sticking with Vaccaro, although not a Polamalu pick; fits a need should be above average safety for years.
David Amerson- CB/S S. Carolina (Lemonier, Brown, Green, Moore, Collins)
Ball hawk that provides depth at C and S immediately, time to grow into a starter, possibly to team with Vaccaro.
Ryan Swope- WR Texas Tech
Tough, quick, and fast, should soften the loss of Ward and Sanders.
LeVeon Bell-RB Mich. State
Not top notch acceleration or speed, but a complete back. The smaller backs arenít that much faster, so I will go with what appears to be a more complete and stable back for the long haul.
AJ Klein- ILB Iowa State
Best ILB on the board.
Rodney Smith; WR-FSU
Tall receiver to replace Burris, may not run best routes, but coachable and solid pick this late.
Vince Williams-ILB FSU

Really wanted a TE, but this mock gives us some playmakers on both sides of the ball. Remember David Johnson was having a tremendous game in Phila before his injury, has something to prove. We need hungry and humble players (with talent), not self-promoting ďstars.Ē

Hope we can move down, gain some picks (get one of the top 3 TEs; Ryan Griffin/Tulane, Sorenson S. Utah as developmental QB; Ray Graham).

I know i did not address the WR position and chose the TE route. But remember we also have David Gilreath. Like Golden, I also liked what I saw from him.

Just not confident that there are teams willing to trade into the 17th spot. Great draft for good players, but difficult to justify any for the 17th pick-thats why I went for Vaccaro. Im good with one of the top TEs in lieu of WR (helps pass and run game); like Alabama TE later for run blocking, big body to seal the edge and catch dump off passes.

We need more splash plays, did come from Troy, but relied too much on him for this, so Im willing to draft NT from Alabama #1 if this would open up lanes for LB sacks etc.
Reason I had Amerson at #2 - need more ball hawks in the secondary.

I think some teams may want to trade up to 17 if the right player falls and that could include Vaccaro or a Star Lotulalei. But then again maybe the Steelers would want either of those guys as well.

Like the TE idea though , because when Heath comes back healthy you will have an incredible two TE attack with 2 6'5" guys with great hands running around out there. Great in the red zone too.

And the only thing I feel about 100% sure of this draft is the Steelers will without question be drafting a WR high.

Agree with your thinking re: TEs. Favorite coordinator was Ron Erhardt, who Pitt lost in favor of Chan G-not such a proponent of the TE. With the speed of today's game, the TE has emerged again as a critical piece of the run and pass game.

I believe there is better draft value with the top 3 TEs than the top 3 WRs-just need to maximize value of #17-and ensure the player is pro bowl type regardless of position.

I just can't see us using that high of a pick on a Tight End, especially when we'll be getting Heath back during the year, he has a few good years left, and we just re-signed Spaeth. That, on top of all of our other areas of [more dire] need, I just can't see us getting a TE any higher than the third round.

it could depend on when they expect Heath back. I agree, considering Heath could be back on the field this year and the recent signing of Matt Spaeth I'm not sure the TE is a high priority for us in the draft. I was hoping we might go after a play maker at the position.

As for pick a WR high, we might see one if Sanders ends up signing with the Pats.
