With the Oline coach we had, and the QB coach we currently have...i wonder if those picks would have been successful here either

You're right. It's probably a little of both. If only Mendenhall was a little more mentally stable and had a few less injuries he would have been more productive. His problem was never that he didn't have the talent.

DeSean Jackson? Really? He's worse than Santonio and Wallace combined

Round 2 - Limas Sweed WR (Ray Rice RB)

Round 3 - Bruce Davis OLB (Jermichael Finley, TE, Cliff Avril OLB)

Jermichael Finley also has a bunch of cases with locker room problems

Round 4 - Tony Hills (Josh Sitton OG)

Round 5 - Dennis Dixon QB (Carl Nicks OG)

Round 6a - Mike Humpal LB (Pierre Garcon WR)

I strongly believe he got good just because of Manning. Manning and Brady make their WRs look really good.

Round 6b - Ryan Mundy S (Matt Flynn QB)

Matt had one good game

Round 7 - no selection (traded to Atlanta)
I'm not saying our draft is better than those picks here. Just saying a lot of the selections aren't actually the greatest PLUS not every draft can be filled with studs or even starters. That 2008 draft looked really good on paper, but sadly didn't pan out.

You also can't blame all our shortcomings on one draft.

It makes me really sad that in the 2008 draft we could have had Duane Brown (possibly best LT in NFL) in the first, Ray Rice (great all-around RB) in the second, and Mario Manningham or Cliff Avril in the third; as opposed to Mendenhall, Sweed (ugh), and Davis (ugh).

Hindsight is 20/20 I guess but damn it would have been nice to have names like that on this roster right now.

Honestly, when all the LT's went in the draft, I would have likely done this:

1. Brandon Flowers, CB (ran a somewhat slow 40, but some had him as the best CB in draft)
2. Jeremy Zuttah, OG/T (2nd Tier OT, but a mauler with good feet)
3. Cliff Avril (one of the favorite pass rushers at the draft)
4. Letroy Guyon (I thought was best value left at DE for us at the time)
5. Carl Nicks (mammoth OT who looked great at Senior Bowl and nickname IHOP )
6. Mike Hart RB (at this point I would have been looking RB or WR and Hart was so productive in the Big Ten.....guess it would have been a miss)

So really, I was thinking O line and D Line, but with all the good ones gone Flowers was BPA and Avril still on the board in the 3rd would have filled the need for pass rush depth. I thought he was a 2nd rounder. Some would say Zuttah was a reach and both Guyon and Hart were misses. My plan was Carl Nicks would play RT......but who knew.

I wanted guys like Jordy Nelson, Eddie Royal, Early Doucet, but we needed line help more and they were gone before I would have addressed that. Pretty sad that scouting off the TV was better than the Steelers staff that year.

Yeah, Larry Zierlein would have started "Rollerskates" Scott over Brown at LT because that's his guy!

I think Scott was Kuglers guy though....which is why i was never impressed with him as an O-line coach either

I wanted Ray Rice, Limas Sweed*, Philip Wheeler, & Carl Nicks.

*I still don't think that Sweed was the "wrong" pick; who would have known that the dude would have such mental issues. He dropped in the draft, after breaking his hand, and was worth the injury risk in R2. Now, obviously, he was a bust... but, again, it wasn't because if the injury.
