Default Steelers' Redman and Bell starting Monday night not ruled out

By Ray Fittipaldo / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said this morning he has not yet ruled out injured running backs Isaac Redman and Le'Veon Bell for the second preseason game Monday night in Washington.

Both players, who are listed as co-starters this week, were injured during practice Thursday. Bell, a rookie out of Michigan State, aggravated a bruise on his left knee. Redman sustained a stinger. Both were limited participants in practice Friday.

If Redman and Bell do not play, Jonathan Dwyer, the team???s leading rusher last season, would start and get most of the carries.

Tomlin also said he would like to see his players perform better on special teams against the Redskins than they did in the preseason opener against the Giants when a punt was blocked and David Gilreath fumbled a punt return. Tomlin said LaRod Stephens-Howling will get a chance to return kickoffs and rookie third-round pick Markus Wheaton will get a chance to return punts.

The Steelers will hold one final training camp practice that is open to the public at 3 p.m. today.

I would really like to see Bell in the game and at game speed, kind of like prom night, the anticipation is killing me.

I know bro me too. I was just posting in the Bettis thread how Bell's ability is similar . BETTIS was nimble , had quick feet , good vision , and could plow you over. Bell although slighter in frame has good short area quickness ,agility , good vision , deceptive burst through the hole and can run you over as well.
I wouldn't mind him sitting on Monday , if the Dr. Thinks he should. Better safe than sorry. But if he's good to go , I'll be excited to watch his pre season debut. :D

I'd like to see what Redman's got at this point as well. But yeah, if Bell's got any lingering problems with that knee, there's no reason to rush him in there.

Redman has to be a lock to make this team imho. His short yardage toughness is needed to spell Bell.

Honestly , I still feel a confident , in shape Dwyer can do well in this zbs scheme. I would definitely keep him over batch. Batch has done nothing with the ball in his hands. If Dwyer continues to play special teams , it will help his chances. If we truly want to have an effective running game and a balanced offense . You need all 3 guys with Wil and the Howling complimenting . Injuries are inevitable. Our home turf has taken out quite a few guys over the years. Bell gets the bulk. Redman and Dwyer spell or fill in if Bell goes down.

Batch has shown me nothing. I just don't know that they'll keep Dwyer, when they really seem to be heading towards a change of pace back like Stephens-Howling.

I agree, lose Batch. He hasn't shown anything. It's a toss up between Dwyer and Redman for me. Both have shown a lot at times, but Dwyer tapping his helmet to come out every other play is no good.

Stephens-Howling was running hard the other night, it would be nice to keep him.

Oh , The Howling is a lock too imo . He's the change of pace . Sorry if I didn't stress that. I think batch is odd man out. I think its Bell , Redman , Howling , Dwyer , and Wil Johnson. I'd go with those 5 backs cause they are gonna be asked to cover for our injury deficient TE position in the passing game as receivers and blockers. As well as carry the rock. Gotta hold down the fort til Heath comes back healthy. Then our Line willing , we shall have weapons galore to run and pass in perfect harmony. So sayeth the Stoner. Cheers brothers ! :D
