It's not just you. They look like little kids in huge bodies.

Yep.

My neighbor's son is 15 1/2, and the kid has a driver's permit... and he looks like he's a baby. Likewise, every time I see an interview with a college player, I think, "He must be some sort of prodigy... because, he looks twelve!!!"

In that same vein, the local frozen yogurt place is suddenly really tasty. I've started to eat All Bran for breakfast. And, I've discovered a newfound appreciation for "Matlock."

THE MATCHUP

by Jim Wexell

The opposing players -- Kelvin Beachum and Terrell Suggs -- didn't want to talk Wednesday about the most important matchup Sunday against the Ravens. But on Thursday, Haley did.

"He's got his work cut out for him, there's no doubt about it," Haley said of Beachum, who made his first career start at left tackle last Sunday and now goes up against a player only two years removed from being named NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

In his one-plus seasons with the Steelers, Beachum has played four line positions and tight end. He was a four-year starter at left tackle in college but was drafted to be an everyman for everybody. Until now.

"One thing about Kelvin is that every time we say hes this, he shows us he can be something more," Haley said. "Thats happened at every position. Now, its left tackle. This will be the biggest test to date. Hes working hard to get ready, but 55 [Suggs] is a great player."

Suggs has 7 sacks this season, or as many as the Steelers' entire defense. Haley was asked if Beachum will continue to be viewed as a valuable five-position reserve by the coaching staff.

"No, were taking some of that off of him so he can just focus on one job," Haley said. "Hes the left tackle and hes getting ready to play."

Is Beachum more talented than Gilbert and Adams.

Nope.

But he sure has great heart, character and work ethic.

Many Steelers draftnicks speculated that Beachum would be a late round gem.

It looks like they may have nailed this one.

Go Beachum!

Go Beachum!
I have no idea if he'll be a star at LT. The one thing I do know is that the game isn't too big for this guy. He doesn't get overwhelmed by the moment, or just freeze up when things aren't going well for him during a game. He's a thinker, and a worker.

When Adams struggled during a game, you could see him freeze up. It's not that he didn't want to try. He had a bad reaction to getting beaten like a drum, and literally didn't know what to do. He handled it badly.

When Beachum struggles during a game, he analyzes what the defense is trying to do to him and he adjusts his game. The guy is very smart, and he is able to take what he learned in practice and in game experiences, and apply it to improve during a game. That takes smarts, and it takes heart. If he goes against a guy that is just physically better than him, there's only so much anyone can do when you're physically overmatched. However, he will try everything he can to slow him down. I really like his approach to the game. Very cerebral.

Adams will get better. Gilbert is doing a little better this year. Not everyone has the mental toughness and smarts that Beachum obviously has.

We'll see what he can do today.

We'll definitely see what Beachum's got today. going against either Suggs or Dumervill most of the game will be a big challenge. I think he can handle it.

Like I've said before, we haven't seen him match up with a pass rushing specialist like Jared Allen or Julius Peppers yet, and I can't wait to see how this goes for him!
