Default Steelers beat Ravens, 19-16, with late field goal

Steelers beat Ravens, 19-16, with late field goal

October 20, 2013
By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger hands off to Le'Veon Bell against the Ravens in the second quarter Sunday at Heinz Field.

Shaun Suisham, who won three games on his final kick last season, did it again tonight when his 42-yard field goal with no time left gave the Steelers a 19-16 victory over the Baltimore Ravens tonight.

Their second straight victory lifted the Steelers' record to 2-4. Baltimore, the reigning Super Bowl champs, fell to 3-4.

The game was typically close for this epic rivalry between AFC North Division rivals.
Suisham kicked four field goals tonight and has made all 14 field goals he has tried this season.

Emmanuel Sanders returned his first kickoff this season, and at first it appeared he returned it 107 yards for a stunning touchdown with 1:46 to go. However, the officials ruled Sanders had stepped out of bounds at the Steelers 37 and they began their drive there.

They reached a first down at Baltimore's 37 after a 13-yard pass to Antonio Brown, who then caught another for 11 yards two plays later to put the ball on the 24 with 28 seconds left.

Rookie Le'Veon Bell, who ran for 93 yards, ran for no gain to position the ball in the middle of the field for Suisham's winning kick.

Joe Flacco, who has engineered some late drives at Heinz Field to pull games out for the Ravens lately, drove them 73 yards on 16 plays to tie it 16-16 with 1:58 left.

Flacco threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dallas Clark, who beat safety Ryan Clark in the back of the end zone. It was Baltimore's only touchdown and it was the first time the Steelers lost their lead since they scored their only touchdown on the second series of the game.

Baltimore closed the gap to 13-9 with 13:04 left on Justin Tucker's third field goal, from 32 yards.

The Steelers went back on top by seven three minutes later on Suisham's third field goal, from 38 yards. However, on the previous play, Derek Moye dropped a perfectly placed pass by Ben Roethlisberger in both hands in the right corner of the end zone that would have gone for a 20-yard touchdown.

They had taken over at the Ravens' 38 to start that drive when Baltimore's onside kickoff attempt failed and a 5-yard offsides penalty was tacked on.

The Steelers had extended their halftime lead to 13-6 when Suisham kicked his second field goal of the game, from 28 yards, with 2:56 left in the third quarter.

The Steelers moved 70 yards in 13 plays on that drive and had a second down at the four after Bell ran seven yards on a first down. However, a one-yard loss by Bell, a false start penalty and an incomplete pass took a possible touchdown away and led to Suisham's kick.
Bell has 90 yards rushing on 17 carries through three quarters.

The Steelers led 10-6 at halftime, adding to their lead in the second quarter. On their first drive of that quarter, they moved the ball primarily behind the running of rookie Bell, and Suisham's 34-yard field goal gave them a 10-3 lead.

However, the Ravens scored again just before halftime.

LaMarr Woodley's fifth sack of the season, a 10-yard loss by Flacco, pushed the Ravens out of field goal range and forced them to punt. The Steelers then looked to be running out the clock in the first half when Roethlisberger completed a 14-yard pass to Heath Miller, who fumbled when he was hit by linebacker Daryl Smith.

Safety Matt Elam recovered and ran it back 12 yards to the Steelers' 38 and Justin Tucker kicked a 38-yard field goal with eight seconds left in the half.

The Steelers led 7-3 after the first quarter.

Heath Miller caught a three-yard shovel pass from Roethlisberger to put them ahead 7-0 after their second offensive series.

They converted three third downs on that 10-play, 60-yard drive, in which coordinator Todd Haley showed off some new maneuvers.

Bell twice took the snap from center with Roethlisberger split out to the left. He handed off to Antonio Brown the first time and on the second, he ran six yards for a first down on third-and-two.

Roethlisberger converted another when he threw to Jerricho Cotchery for 19 yards to the Baltimore 12. Finally, Miller scored on the third third down.

Baltimore also scored on its second drive, only the Ravens were held to a 46-yard field goal by Justin Tucker.

I never thought I'd be so happy to see the Steelers at 2-4!

They keep getting better, and they're figuring out how to win.

yep, we knew they'd have a rough start with key departures in the offseason and new faces in important roles. I was a little shocked to see us lose the first four, but hopefully this team can keep improving and make a push for the playoffs. Unfortunately Cincy keeps squeaking out the W's.

We needed this division win today, and I'm thrilled it happened against the Ravens.

4-4 the first half of the year isnt bad. 6-2 to finish the last half, and the steelers should be able to get the last wild card.

Fire Tomlin!!! I'm getting tired of this winning crap. How are the Steelers going to get a high draft choice in this coming draft to replace these suck ass players on the team?
