A former manager at an Elkhart, Ind., Pizza Hut trying to give his employees some time off says he was fired for refusing to open the store on Thanksgiving, local CBS affiliate WSBT is reporting.

Tony Rohr, who started out at the pizza chain as a cook before working his way up to general manager, confronted his superiors after being told the store would need to be open on Thanksgiving.
In years past, Rohr said, Pizza Hut stores have been closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas, according to Fox 8.
"Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only two days that they're closed in the whole year and they're the only two days that those people are guaranteed to have off and spend it with their families," he told WSBT.
His bosses told him to tender his resignation, but he wrote a scathing letter instead.
"I am not quitting. I do not resign, however I accept that the refusal to comply with this greedy, immoral request means the end of my tenure with this company," Rohr wrote, according to WSBT. " ... I hope you realize that it's the people at the bottom of the totem pole that make your life possible."
The company is already seeing quite a backlash on their official Facebook page, with some commenters calling the chain "greedy" and threatening to never eat there again. The page did not respond to any of the negative comments.
One of Rohr's bosses claimed that he quit, and being open on Thanksgiving wasn't an individual's decision — it was a company decision, according to WSBT.
We've reached out to Pizza Hut for comment and will update this post if we hear back.

Pizza Hut offers to rehire manager who refused to open on holiday

(Reuters) - A store manager of a Pizza Hut franchise in Indiana is mulling over a rehire offer from the worldwide pizza chain after he was fired for refusing to open the restaurant on Thanksgiving Day.
Tony Rohr, 28, said he was told to write a letter of resignation after deciding to give his employees at the Elkhart, Indiana, store the holiday off. He told South Bend, Indiana, station WSBT-TV that he instead wrote a letter explaining why the store, part of Yum Brands Inc, should be closed, and then he was fired.
Pizza Hut's corporate office said in a statement it "strongly recommended that the local franchisee reinstate the store manager, and they have agreed."
Although the choice to open on a holiday is made at the local level, most U.S. franchise locations are closed on Thanksgiving, it said.
As Rohr prepared to celebrate Thanksgiving with his family on Thursday, he told CNN he had not decided how to respond to the rehire offer.
"That's something I can't decide right away," he said. "I'll start looking into stuff tomorrow."
A call by Reuters to the store formerly managed by Rohr was answered with a recorded message saying: "We are closed for the holiday."
With U.S. retailers offering "Black Friday" discount deals before Thanksgiving, critics circulated online petitions, and a handful of franchise owners said they had defied corporate orders by keeping their stores closed for the holiday.
"It bothers me that this country is allowing them to dictate time away from our families," Holly Cassiano, who refused to open her Sears franchise in Plymouth, New Hampshire, told CNN.
Among other retailers, grocer Whole Foods Market Inc . said its Thanksgiving work shifts were voluntary and that it would compensate staff with time-and-a-half pay. Discount chain Kmart, a Sears unit, said it had offered its holiday workers the same arrangement.

This corporate kind of greed has gotten way out of control. Between all of the stores now opening earlier and earlier into Thanksgiving and now restaurants wanting to follow suit, it's becoming a snowball effect and it's just not right IMO. People should be allowed time away for family during major holidays like this. The only way it will stop is if people refuse to go to these places on those major holidays. Sadly, I don't think this will happen as not only corporate greed is to blame here, but the greed of individuals who are looking for cheap deals on useless junk. It's only a matter of time before corporations find a way to milk another dollar out of their patrons on Christmas and New Years Day.

ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY DOLLAR!!!

At the very least take volunteers, if they want to work on a holiday. If you don't get enough volunteers then you don't open. As crazy as it sounds some people actually like working on the holidays.

That would be a reasonable solution. If people choose to work and you have enough volunteers to open, then have at it but people should not be forced to work on major holidays like that.
