Those three are my picks for each of those rounds.

...although, if Purifoy is gone at 48, I say that they go safety first (Deone Bucannon), and then get a CB with the R3 comp pick (e.g. Aaron Colvin).

1. NT Nix
2. CB Purifoy (or S Bucannon)
3. S/CB
4. BPA
5. RB/KR De'Anthony Thomas

The thing about Bucannon is that he is a better fit for the SS position which is Shamarko's positions. But I do like him as a prospect.

Bruce Davis, Thad Gibson, Jasom Worilids, Chris Carter, etc have not proven to be replacements for what Porter, Haggans, Harrison, Woodley used to give in pressure. Smith, Hampton, Keisel were much better than Hood, McLendon, Heyward.

Do you really think CB's like Townsend, McFadden, Gay were great at defending the pass? They had a pass rush in front of them that didn't allow QB's the time that they get now.

Dick LeBeau is not the problem, the poor level of talent drafted to replace aging players is the main problem. That being said, I really hope that Keith Butler sticks around long enough to become the next DC. LeBeau cant coach forever and I hope Butler is around to run a similar scheme.

I will be praying to the football gods for RD1 Louis Nix, RD2 Louchiez Purifoy, RD3 Jeremiah Attoachu.
So instead of changing the scheme to fit the players we have, you want to draft a completely new set of players to fit an old scheme?

We'll never agree on that.

True.

That said, while the two of them are very physical, Bucannon is more of an enforcer (punishing WRs) than a close-to-the-line run-stuffer.

More importantly, they could be interchangeable (like Troy & Ryan did, a few years back, against the Ravens)... which would make for an interesting defense. Is Shark dropping deep?... or, is Bucannon? Either way, they're going to hit me!!!

Nope, we still run the 3-4, but a few things:

1. We need to get stronger and better up the middle. The middle of a 3-4 is the NT and 2 ILB. I think that Timmons is one of the best in the game, Vince Williams in his 2nd year should progress to be at least comparable to Earl Holmes in his day, but we need a NT better than McLendon. Louis Nix would be that if the is there at pick #15.

2. We need to be able to pressure the QB. Improvement of Jarvis Jones at ROLB is vital and likewise somebody like Worilds or Woodley on the left side that will apply pressure in the pass game is vital to the back end of the defense.

3. We need to start getting younger in the Secondary. Cortez Allen MUST improve and contribute next season. A young CB or FA must come in and be ready to take over for Ike and Shamarko Thomas must come in and be ready to take over for Clark.

The 3-4 is predicated on stopping the run and pressuring the QB in passing situations. Steelers draft misses have left the talent pool pretty shallow to be able to do either.

Why overhaul the defense to a new scheme with poor talent, when you can just try and add a few more pieces to the scheme that you have drafted talent to play in already. If we say Heyward, Jones, Williams, Allen, Thomas, Timmons, Worilds are young talent suited to the current defense, then that is already 7 pieces of the 11 needed to start on Sunday.

I'm in favor of evolution to a younger group on defense. You seem to want a Revolution to the entire type of defense the team runs. We'll never agree on that.

I agree with your post. The only thing I would add or maybe amend would be the role of the salary cap in this.

The Steelers had incredible success, which resulted in them drafting late in the first round nearly every year. They also elected to sign many of their veteran players to contracts at advanced ages because they thought they may be able to squeeze another Super Bowl out of this group. Some of those big contracts to once great players is exactly what is hampering their efforts to solidify the roster by keeping good young players entering into their second contracts, and signing key free agents that could fill the roles necessary to fill the gaps in drafted talent that doesn't become starter level talent on a playoff level team.

They had one disastrous draft, but they haven't been whiffing on a yearly basis. In fact, they are still one of the best drafting teams, they just had a couple average drafts. I think the money they spent on veterans and the salary cap limits it puts them up against have severely limited the versatility they normally have to improve the team, and taken away the ability to resign young players they would have kept if the financial situation was different . That magnifies the impact of drafted players that don't become big time players, while the great young players they cultivated walk out the door to help other teams.

If the Steelers could manage to ease the salary cap distress they are in right now, they will get right back to where they have been for the better part of 20 years: Making the playoffs and contending for championships.

I agree with both pc and gonzo, if we can fix the 1-3 holes we have, we can be a solid def. I think if we can just be an above avg def we will be a great team as our offense is getting to be explosive. I am excited for next season as I feel we are just a couple of pieces away from being a true contender. Stop the running game on the DL, keep Worilds production (with him or a FA) and get JJ to at least Worilds production and improve our CB play and we fix the defense just in time for the offense to hit its stride and we are contending.
