None of those things mentioned make Bettis an immortal which is what the Hall of Fame is for. It makes him a very good to almost great back. i posted 10 things that keep him out and no one can come up with more than half that to get him in.

He scored 12 TDs on that Super Bowl run but he was the back up. IN fact, he fumbled on the most important carry of his career.

The games played is deceiving as the last couple of seasons he was a short yardage and goal line guy only.

emotions on how we personally feel about someone doesnt make them a hall of famer.

and of course, as typical of this board, when someone puts stats as their debate, idiots who dont know anything post like the idiots they were brought up to be.

i tried for an off season debate.

being consistently good has to count for having a great career. #6 all-time rushing should really be a shoe-in for the HoF.

everyone else on in top 10 all-time rushing seems to be a first ballot HoF, why not bettis? It's his time

The case against players like Bettis is understandable, but I don't get your logic here.

Lets just go down the list of HoFamers by your specific criteria and choose some at random:

http://www.profootballhof.com/hof/alphabetical.aspx

Doug Atkins, Nick Buoniconti, Curley Culp... Roger Werhli and Ron Yary are in the HoF. What's 'immortal' about those guys? (Maybe some of you old timers recall those guys, but, on average, it's unlikely that most would).

There are surely plenty of other guys who aren't 'immortal' in the sense like an Earl Campbell, Jack Lambert or Joe Montana; that doesn't lessen their achievements or contributions to the game. Not everyone can be that level of 'memorable' or 'charismatic'.

Bettis was one of the best backs of his generation with a specific and memorable style who succeeded in/with that style for a prolonged period of time. His career achievements certainly warrant consideration.

So your point is valid that he isn't a first ballot HoF lock like a LaDanian Tomlinson, but that doesn't mean he isn't a Hall of Famer.

Can't believe that I have to post this but I guess I have to inform the people who so easily forget a unforgettable NFL Legacy.

Bettis had a KEY contribution to the Steeler's Super Bowl run in 2005.

The Steeler had lost 3 in a row and needed to win the next four games to get into the playoffs.

They faced off against the Bears in the snow with their backs against the wall.

Bettis had 17 carries for 101 yards with a 5.9 YPC Average and 2 Touchdowns against the stout Bears Defense that carried the Bears to the NFC North Title.

Jerome's effort and leadership catapulted the Steelers into a 4 game win streak where they entered the playoffs as a 6 seed becoming the first 6 seed to EVER win the super bowl.

This is his defining moment.

Your Welcome.

true but how many players even come close to cracking the top 10 all-time in rushing yards? that feat in itself is impressive enough to guarantee him a spot IMO

sure, if terell davis / priest holmes / bo jackson / whoever else didnt get injured then they woulda done it. yeah if my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle. the fact of the matter is that they didn't

durability and longevity is also factors that make a great career

He chose to ignore that one and as you said, his place on that list speaks volumes for his durability and longevity.

Stats are used too often to muddy up the value or performance of a player. They have their place, but they NEVER tell the whole story. The Bus is a HoFer in my humble opinion and I don't care about his damn stats. He had an effect on the games he played in that are not tracked by statistics.

Stats are for losers.

However, those guys had to wait 13, 25, 31, 25, and 19 years to get in, respectively.
