I just went to a slaughterhouse near KC to get raw meat for my dog at a small pig slaughtering shop. The guys were all sitting around eating lunch and one guy had blood stains all over his sleeve; not to mention a heavy smell in the room. Now, if you can casually chomp on Doritos in that environment I imagine you become pretty callous towards the animals.

That's awful. Those people should be taken out back and dealt with in the same manner with which they treated the animals. I'm no animal rights activist, and I like my meat but that shit right there is just fucked up.

“We raise them for us; That means we owe them some respect. Nature is cruel, but we don't have to be. I wouldn't want to have my guts ripped out by a lion. I'd much rather die in a slaughter house if it were done right.” -Temple Grandin

HBO made a movie about Temple Grandin and how she was able to radically redesign how animals move through slaughterhouses so that they are as stress-free as possible. She's also one of the few people with autism who can communicate how her thought process works.

I saw a documentary on her. The stress of bad slaughterhouses actually lowers the quality of the meat because the animals have unsavory hormones spoiling the meat flavor when they're agitated.

for championship sunday i had a big fat t-bone from half a cow purchased from a local 4-H kid. the cow was entered in the county fair, but not one of the big prize winners, however this beef was as close to kobe beef as you can get.

no preservatives or hormones. grass and grain fed. raised, loved and cared for as a pet.

$2 a pound for half a cow, then the cut it however you want, process and package it, even grind you hamburger and make you sausage.

cant beat that when the grocery store is selling beef from canada, mexico, or USA for no less than $7/pound.

Theres a Dr. guy here that his hobby is raising buffalo. Every couple years he needs to thin out the bulls before they start killing each other, so I get to go on a buffalo "hunt". More or less free range buffalo, no steroids, grass fed or whatever the hell they eat on 5000 acres. I can't remember the last time we bought beef from the grocery store.

Something else about that slaughter house. It was a really small looking operation; maybe they had 5 guys working there. They said they got their pigs from all over including Canada and were selling them to one buyer in California (this is around KC, BTW). Seems ludicrous that we have to ship animals that far for slaughter, but I guess that's how good our infrastructure is.
