Default Re: Steelers Hire Mike Munchak as Offensive Line Coach

I'll tell ya right now this was because they're catering to Bell's running style. His premium ability is to run behind a zone blocking scheme and, as if by magic, Munchak runs a ridiculously talented zone run/block scheme. It also fits the exact skill set that Pouncey and DeCastro possess as well.

I said a little while ago that I think he would choose Pittsburgh over Houston for a number of reasons, but the young and possibly All Pro talent along the line, as well as a stable front office, franchise Quarterback and future franchise Running Back would seal the deal. I think he simply picked the organization that had the best shot of winning championships in the near future.

The Titans' sacks allowed and rushing numbers during Munchak's tenure as OL Coach (1997-2010):

28 sacks/year (this would have been the 3rd best in the NFL this season)
1,992 rushing yards/year (this would have been the 13th best in the NFL this season)

Is that guy really that good?

I don't even know why I am excited!
I'm not really read up on the guy, but it seems like he's produced top lines with players who weren't top round picks coming out of college. He seems to be able to get the most out of players.

It's worth pointing out that the Bengals and Geno Atkins struggle against a true zone block scheme. Neutralizing the pass rush of the top team in the AFC North may have also played a key part in it too.

This tells me that the Rooney's and Mike are focused on getting back on top - and soon.

This looks like a great one year hire

I am encouraged by the fact Munchak could sit out next season and collect the $3 million owed on the last year of his Titans contract but saw the non-coordinator's position with the Steelers as a better career move than sitting out as he presumably hopes to get a better gig in the future

I agree, it'll probably for a year, two at the most. But if the current guy who coached the OL for the second half, forgot his name, can learn from him. They could just promote him after he leaves.

Reports: Steelers hire Mike Munchak as offensive line coach
Published 9:19 PM EST Jan 22, 2014

Scranton native, Penn State alum also had job offer from Houston Texans

PITTSBURGH —Former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak will become the next offensive line coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to numerous reports.

The Houston Chronicle's John McClain tweeted Wednesday night that Munchak would be joining the Steelers instead of the Houston Texans, where he also interviewed for the same position under new head coach Bill O'Brien. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter also reported Munchak was going to Pittsburgh.

Munchak, 57, spent the past three seasons in Tennessee as head coach of the Titans. Before that, he spent 12 years with the franchise -- then the Houston Oilers -- as a Hall of Fame offensive lineman. After that, he joined the Oilers coaching staff in 1994 and remained with the franchise until this offseason.

A native of Scranton, Pa., and an alumni of Penn State, Munchak is the third former head coach on Mike Tomlin's staff in Pittsburgh, joining Dick LeBeau (Cincinnati Bengals) and Todd Haley (Kansas City Chiefs).

Munchak takes over the reins of the Steelers' offensive line from Jack Bicknell Jr., who was fired earlier this month after one season in Pittsburgh.

The team planned to install an outside zone-blocking scheme under Bicknell, but those plans never really materialized and were only confounded by injuries.

Steelers to hire Mike Munchak

Mike Munchak will join the Pittsburgh Steelers as their new offensive line coach, league sources confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday night.

The Hall of Fame offensive lineman was fired as coach of the Tennessee Titans earlier this month, after compiling a three-season mark of 22-26 and not taking the team to the playoffs. Before leading the Titans, he was their offensive line coach for 14 years.

Munchak and the Steelers met last Friday about the position, which was left open when coach Mike Tomlin fired Jack Bicknell Jr. after just one season.

Munchak's name has been mentioned with several head-coaching vacancies since the regular season ended, including the still-open Cleveland Browns position and the since-filled spots with the Detroit Lions and Penn State Nittany Lions.

He will be the fourth offensive line coach the Steelers have had since Tomlin took over in 2007.

Despite coming on strong late in the year, Pittsburgh fielded one of the worst rushing attacks in the NFL, finishing tied for 27th with 86.4 yards per game. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was sacked 42 times, seventh most in the NFL.

News of Munchak's hiring was first reported by the Houston Chronicle.

Suck it, ESPN!

Still no statement from the Steelers as far as I know.
