Steelers hosting Louis Delmas

Posted by Mike Florio on February 17, 2014

The Lions cut safety Louis Delmas last week. The Steelers will be getting the first crack at signing him.

The 2009 second-round pick is visiting the Steelers on Monday, per a league source. Because his contract was terminated, Delmas can sign with any team, at any time.

In Detroit, Delmas played safety in a defense that didnít really pigeonhole one safety or the other as strong or free. In Pittsburgh, free safety Ryan Clark will become a free agent, and strong safety Troy Polamalu has a base salary of $8.25 million and a cap number of $10.88 million. Delmas could replace either of them, in theory.

Or his visit could be primarily about squeezing Clark and/or Polamalu into accepting whatever offer the Steelers currently have on the table.

I wouldn't get my hopes up, I don't think we'll be able to afford signing him, at least not today.

Brent Alexander... Ryan Clark... Louis Delmas.

Low-end FS, who comes in & plays better than he did with his prior team.

I approve.

I'd do it! Younger on defense! And we could fill a need before the draft!!!

It's amazing what the fit in a defensive scheme, coaching, and close-knit organization and locker room can do for a player.

James Farrior agrees.

There are some pretty huge red flags with Delmas though. Notably his inability to stay healthy the last few seasons. Even when he was on the field, he wasn't a great player. As @teegre alluded to, however, Clark and Farrior were underachievers for their teams as well and came to us and performed at an All Pro level.

Could be a great signing.
