Who knew - Russians able to poke fun at themselves in closing ceremonies

During Sunday’s Closing Ceremony, Russia poked fun at its infamous Opening Ceremony gaffe, in which one of the five Olympic rings failed to form, leaving four rings and a snowflake. Near the beginning of the festivities on Sunday night, a group of dancers wearing bright, glittery outfits converged to form four Olympic rings. But, just like 16 nights ago, the fifth ring didn’t form.

So Dan Bylsma coached the second-most talented Olympic hockey team off the podium altogether; meanwhile, Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz each score a goal against Sweden to help Canada win back-to-back gold medals. I guess we know what the real problem has been with the Penguins in recent post-seasons.

Trib-Review columnist Dejan Kovacevic ripped Bylsma

They were declawed by their own coach. They were deployed in a 1-2-2 trap that had a group of dedicated, career-long forecheckers skating backward. That was fine with all the leads early in the tournament but an egregious error in the medal round.

I was a critic of Bylsma before, but he's been dead to me since the Eastern Conference Finals last year. He won four post-season series in his first three months as the head coach of the Penguins; he's won three post-season series since. And his last two post-season series losses were absolute embarrassments. The Penguins have become the Canucks of the East on his watch.

I mean, it also helps that our defense was easily twice as good as the US. Canada allowed 6 goals all tournament, 5 under Carey Price. Finland scored 5 goals against the Americans in the bronze medal game. Price and Quick are pretty equal in terms of talent. The only thing left would be defensive talent.

Losing to Canada was the straw, I think. After that, it seemed like they didn't care.

But there were several players for the U.S. who seemed to be at odds with the gameplan against Finland. Even Zach Parise labeled it "passive."

Oh, fact checking myself. Canada actually allowed three goals all tournament. See, even I underestimated our defense.

@Gnutella that's a good point. Their game plan against Canada was pretty quickly abandoned because of how good our team was though. Most of, if not all of the Americans chances came from the outside and you're not beating Price from 50 feet on the boards. Still, Bylsma and co. had to come up with a better game plan and come back reinvigorated against the Fins, and they didn't.
