Calm down. This tag only lasts for 1 year, right? So it's not like we just broke the bank long-term for him. If he stays this year we can see if it's just a fluke or if he's the real deal before committing long-term to him. This isn't a Woodley situation yet where we're stuck with a bad contract for 5 years. I don't think it's a bad move. We had to do something to help out the OLB position.

I definitely think that this signals Woodley is done. Expect him to be gone by June 1st. It also says that guys like Ike, Foote, and Keisel could likely be gone or brought back for much less. I'm sure Colbert and company have a plan to make the numbers work. They still have more possible restructures to do as well with Brown, Timmons, and Troy.

It may be over-paying for him, but it gives us more time to assess him and address the position going forward. It won't kill us long-term and also gives us an opportunity to work out a more cap-friendly long-term deal in the meantime.

Exactly, well said. This buys them much needed TIME, which in turn allows them to see his market value with the ability to match an offer if they deem it worthwhile. I'm not too fond of paying him nearly 10 mil just like everybody else, but I understand the logic.

Also, we do not lose the comp pick we would receive from him leaving.

This does make sense. I'm just interested to see who stays and who goes. Woodley when healthy is dominant as any other olb. Worilds is younger and to me playing with a chip on his shoulder. We shall see.

With signing bonus wouldn't Byrd be a bigger cap hit than $11 million in 2014? Eagles are rumored to be interested in Byrd (and Worilds)

They placed transition tag on him, so Worilds can still walk if Steelers do not match any offer he receives

I think we'll see Woodley cut. They have to give Worilds his spot if they are going to pay him that much and they also will more than likely want Jones starting on the other side.

I also believe Ike will be cut, but possibly be re-signed for less which isn't a bad thing. He's getting paid too much for what he can provide now.

Believe me, the Steelers have a plan. They'll make it work even if we see some beloved vets cut loose. As long as they choose the right ones, we'll be fine. Changes need to be made to improve on back-to-back 8-8 seasons. We can't continue relying on the old guard to improve the team going forward. Age catches up with everyone sooner or later.

People acting like he is a scrub smh. Keeping a injured proned Woodley and drafting an OLB and hoping he turns out good or better than Worilds or Woodley will lead to more 8-8 seasons. This isn't madden. We drafted Worilds to replace Harrison(now Woodley) when we drafted him in the 2nd round and then he finally got PT and produced and now we want him gone? That's something the Browns do

Worilds was "one" of best players on Defense last year and deserves to be brought back.
Exactly! Him and Heyward were like the only bright spots on defense last year. Woodly is the question mark here, NOT Worilds.

Transition tag given to Jason Worilds all but cuts LaMarr Woodley
By Neal Coolong

Unless the Steelers are comfortable paying two outside linebackers 18 percent of their salary cap, one of them has to go. It seems more likely Woodley is headed for a June 1 cut.

June 1 will mark a new point in the career of LaMarr Woodley. Obviously not playing games in the middle of the summer, Woodley may have to see June 1 as a reminder of the end of his time with the team that drafted him.

Jason Worilds was given the Steelers' transition tag Monday, guaranteeing him $9.75 million for the 2014 season. Adding that into Woodley's $8 million salary, one of them has to go.

And it ain't gonna be Worilds.

Woodley, the team's second round pick in 2007, has suffered multiple injuries over the last three seasons, taking his playing time and as a byproduct his statistics down to a minimal level. Minimal, in comparison to the expectations placed on him when he signed a 6-year, $61.5 million contract after the lockout in 2011.

How does he stay? If he takes a pay cut. Considering the Steelers are obviously showing a commitment to Worilds, Woodley would probably be smart to refuse and look to play somewhere else before he'd be cut next season in favor of the future.

I agree with a lot of this along with what others are saying, but McLendon is a bright spot that in my opinion should be moved to the other DE spot. either way I like McLendon as well as Heyward, Worilds, and Timmons. Add in an aging Polamalu, a Cortez Allen, and an improving Vince Williams too!

obviously the gap between what Worilds agent wanted and what we offered was too big to bridge so they're rolling the dice expecting no one will offer anything too much higher than what they feel he is worth. Aside from a ridiculous Wallace type of contract I suspect we will match anything Worilds is offered or if his agent finds out he has him over valued we will sign him long term ourselves.

Remember Harrison thought he had an insulting offer from us and then he ended up signing elsewhere for less. These agents ask for the moon when they think they have the team over a barrel.

I think Worilds will eventually sign with us and sign long term.
