I have so much hate for the NCAA and the Universities that schemed to create it, that I could stomach the hit taken by the NFL if it meant the death of that deplorable organization.

Yep. Since about the time Tyson left, boxing went into a free-fall. MMA gained in popularity, but it's never gotten near the wide recognition that boxing attained. I used to hold pay per view boxing parties at my crib... now I can't even pronounce the names of 95% of today's fighters... lol.

After Cuban sobered up, he posted a 1500 word manifesto on his Facebook page on why football is doomed - no surprise he has changed his argument and now emphasized the points we discussed here along with some other total nonsense

Cuban: NFL issues go beyond TV

1. I wouldn’t want my son playing football, would you?... I don’t think I’m alone. If we start to see a decline of popularity at the high school and then college level because kids choose other sports, it will hurt the interest in watching the NFL....

2. Player Behavior. The NBA learned this lesson. Fans don’t like to see players acting the fool.

3. Their TV strategy today is perfect. ...

4. Fantasy Football. TV saturation is not the NFL’s biggest risk. What is their biggest risk? Fantasy Football. Yep Fantasy Football.

5. The risk of TV changing. ... The NFL, because of its audience sizes, more than any other pro sport, needs traditional tv to stay strong.

http://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/03/mark...sion-facebook/

Point #1 is very valid - the rest is bullshit. Cuban originally said TV exposure was the problem - now the TV strategy is perfect. But "fantasy football" is what drives the NFL's ratings and now is the sport's biggest risk? And the NFL is dependent on TV revenue but the NBA is not?

Cuban is trolling - NFL hopefully will avoid taking the bait, although Bob Kraft responded yesterday

"He's a very intelligent man," Kraft said. "I can only speak what I know and I've been privileged to be chair of the broadcast committee. We have pretty lucrative contracts going for almost the next decade.

"I have great respect for Mr. Cuban but I'm not sure I agree with his conclusion."

john elway just about said the exact same thing verbatim. the league owners at their meetings probably discussed toeing the company line.

dont get involved in a land war in asia.
dont go head-to-head with a scicilian when death is on the line
dont get into a battle of "wits" with a cuban

I saw something a couple of weeks ago that said some universities have basketball players completely out of class in one month (March I guess?) and practicing 40 hrs a week for the tournament. Amateur student athletes, huh?

Not to derail the thread, but tonight’s episode of HBO Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel includes a look at NCAA "academic requirements" for "student athletes"

http://www.newsobserver.com/#storylink=cpy

Bonus points that it stars players from self-proclaimed "Public Ivy League" school North Carolina - Chapel Hill

Bernard Goldberg: What language did you study?
UNC football player Bryan Bishop: Swahili
Bernard Goldberg: Swahili ... (pause for effect) ... That come in handy since you graduated?

Heard about the UNC stuff on the documentary schooled on Netflix. Highly recommended, if for nothing else but the history lesson it gives on the creation of the NCAA.

Yep.

This morning, on the radio, the TV ratings were compared to "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" The overexposure of that show, led to it's decline. But, as the radio personality stated: "The NFL has 16 games over four months. Fans of a team are not going to get overexposed to its product. A fan will watch his/her team on Sunday, Monday, or Thursday. As for the casual fan, again, it's a four month window... and then, it's gone.m So, there is no real risk of overexposure."

The draft gets more views than most World Series games. I'm not worried at all about the viewers tuning in.

But, as I've already stated, the concussion issues are a real threat.

He's absolutely trolling.

And most of his points stem from the point of view of business, but the NFL is not a business, it is a cartel.

Mark Cuban doesn't think he could afford to buy Dallas Cowboys

LeBron James had no problem passing along some advice for Tony Romo before Tuesday night's Mavericks-Heat game in Dallas. Earlier in the day, Mavs owner Mark Cuban declined to do the same during a radio interview when the questioning centered on Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones...
