Here's another good report!:

Draft choices could make Steelers a faster team this season

"We've always had good speed," Steelers assistant head coach/offensive line coach Russ Grimm said. "But now we've picked up some younger guys that will probably move us up to among the top five or six (fastest) teams in the league."

No. 1 pick Santonio Holmes, a wide receiver from Ohio State, and No. 3b pick Willie Reid, a wide receiver from Florida State, join running back Willie Parker to give the Steelers three players on offense capable of traversing 40 yards in less than 4.4 seconds.

Wide receiver Quincy Morgan and cornerbacks Ike Taylor, Bryant McFadden and Ricardo Colclough can also motor.

On offense especially, the Steelers have seemingly found a new gear, one that has the potential to impact games before they're even played.

"We always wore different padding when we played the run-and-shoot guys because we knew they could run," said defensive backs coach Darren Perry, a safety with the Steelers from 1992-98. "Against Houston, we'd wear our 'little boy' pads because we wanted to be as light as possible.

"If you were playing Cleveland, you weren't worried too much about the speed element of it. You'd put your 'big boy' pads on because you knew you'd be banging all day long, and you wanted that added protection.

"With these guys (Holmes and Reid), you have to put the 'little boy' pads on and be ready for a track meet."

Starting wide receiver Antwaan Randle El is gone from last year's Super Bowl championship team, but veteran Cedrick Wilson will get first crack at the position ahead of the fleet-footed rookies. .

But they can make their presence felt, at least initially, by lining up in three- or four-wide receivers sets and revving their engines.

"It doesn't allow (opposing defenses) to cheat their alignments as much," Whisenhunt said. ""The quarterback can potentially get a better read on coverages.

"A big thing with our defense is disguising coverages. But when you have speed, especially deep speed, the safeties can't be as involved at the line of scrimmage because they can't recover in time to help out on the deep ball. It can help you see what you're doing a little bit better."

And if both safeties are concerned about defending against the deep pass, "Obviously, that keeps another guy out of the box and will help the running game," Grimm said.

Perry has found another advantage to having Holmes and Reid on the team.
They'll keep the defense on its toes during practices.

"You have to defend the whole field," Perry said. "You can't say, 'Hey, this is pretty much what this team does.' They'll run, run, run and all of a sudden you think 'run' and they next thing you know one of these guys will be running by you."

I said after this past draft with that speed kills in the NFL. With Willie Parker, Santonio Holmes and Willie Reid all maybe on the field at the sametime in a few years. That will give defenses fits to defend.

You chimed in on this not too long ago. They stole your post for their story.

Also having the rookies practice against our defense can only get help them get prepared even faster.
