Default Harrison making noise

By The Tribune-Review
Saturday, August 5, 2006

Linebacker James Harrison, seeing plenty of reps in place of injured starter Joey Porter, is making his presence felt at Steelers training camp. Harrison steamrolled running back Willie Parker in a 1-on-1 blocking drill Friday afternoon, and he later picked off a deflected Ben Roethlisberger pass and headed the other way for what would have been a touchdown during 11-on-11 drills.
"James Harrison is having a very good camp," coach Bill Cowher said.

? A blown assignment in the secondary led to a 55-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Batch to rookie Willie Reid during a two-minute drill. Asked if Reid showed something on the play, Cowher said, "Yeah, he didn't miss a layup."

? It's a Steelers tradition for veterans to go out of their way to help out younger players, even if those younger players might be in line to take their jobs. Veteran receiver Quincy Morgan, for example, has been a mentor to second-year receiver Nate Washington.

"The last place I was at -- Dallas -- the guys didn't really help other guys too much," Morgan said. "Here, this team is unbelievable. That's just the absolute truth. I think everybody on this team gets along. Everybody's unselfish, and everybody's willing to help everyone. The common goal is to win games, not be a superstar."

? Reid doesn't look a bit out of place in a fierce competition at wide receiver. He likes it, too.

"The competition is real high," Reid said. "We have a lot of players who can run and catch the ball real good. It's good to be in a group like this. The better the players, the better the competition and the better the team's going to be."

? Rookie tackle Willie Colon on the team's starting offensive linemen: "That front five is amazing. I just want to ride their coattails and learn from the best. We're not talking about the (Buffalo) Bills or somebody. These are some bad boys. I just try to fit my role, learn and take steps day by day."

? Cornerback Deshea Townsend (groin), linebacker Mike Kudla (hamstring), wide receiver Eugene Baker (hamstring), linebacker James Farrior (back) and defensive end Travis Kirschke (back) missed practice yesterday morning. Kirschke and Townsend returned in the afternoon. Farrior said his back tightened up in the morning and that he would be back at practice today.

? Cowher said backup quarterbacks Shane Boyd and Omar Jacobs would see plenty of playing time in early preseason games.

We have too many star linebackers. lol...I want to see this guy start, but not in front of any of the current starters.

"Yeah, he didn't miss a layup."

Is that a slam on ARE? I forget which game when ARE went to spike the ball over the field goal but came up lame.

If so then Cowher is in playoff form.

Why not?

Dog eatin' dog world in the NFL. Anything that can make 19-0 happen should happen. Even if it means one of the four takes a seat. Doubt it will happen this season unless Joey gets gimpy though.

I like James Harrison and thought he played well last season when called upon to do so. He's very physical and has good speed. As much as I like Peezy, I am uncertain at this point as to whether the Steelers will re-sign him at the end of his contract because he will most likely want to be paid a lot more than the Steelers are willing to dish out. Look for Harrison to be a starting LB in 2008 when Porter's contract is up.

James Harrison is a beast. He showed us what he could do in 2004. He followed it up last year with really good playe when he in the games. I have alot of confidence in James Harrison if he has to start due to injury to one of our LB's. The guy is a player thats for sure.

Great to hear Harrison is doing well.

I hope Porter realizes he has no leverage:
Two years left on your deal-watching a promising player licking his chops to take your job-and being a little dinged up while watching from the sidelines.

Sounds like a good opportunity to squash any contract rumors/issues/renegotiations by just keeping his mouth shut and getting ready for the '06 season.

I'm anxious to see what these guys can do. Both are great athletes.
