I like Williams a lot, and love the way he stepped in and took over for Foote the way he did with absolutely zero NFL experience, but he won't be able to edge out Shazier from the way things sound.

With Kiko going down, and us sharing camp with the Bills, maybe we can work out a trade.
Like that idea, maybe a 4th or 5th round draft pick would work just fine.

I find it very funny that everyone thinks Williams had a 'solid' season. He was mediocre.

I find it hilarious that someone is splitting hairs and being a wordsmith over the use of "mediocre" and "solid" in regards to a 6th round rookie who was thrust into the starting lineup.

you make everything seem so back and white as if there is only one answer and you are the one who holds that answer.

football is dealing with people, not machines. there are gray areas that always need to be adressed.

FWIW, lebeau is making scheme adjustments going into this season. you dont make wholehearted changes mid season and expect to go 6-2 down the stretch, knocking on the playoffs door.

i doubt you are capable of memorizing an entire new playbook between weeks 7 and 8, so why would 11 players be able to do the same flawleslly?
I gotta say this is one of the more brilliant, succint posts I've seen...

It makes me very happy that he should not be seeing the field outside of Special Teams this year.

Yea, like what if Vinny turns into this crazy inside animal this season. What would we do with Shazy, turn him into a db?.. Shazy got the skillz to be a wideout imo....lol

Well, he's definitely an UPGRADE from Larry Foote (especially when you consider Rookie 6th vs. Veteran 4th rd. salaries)... and while I'm feeling optimistic so are Shazier, Spence, and Moats.

I still believe OLB is the primary concern on defense (which might necessitate moving a talented ILB backup to the outside). Maybe the reason LeBeau dropped his OLBs into coverage and blitzed Polamalu & Williams more often than not (opting for disguised zone blitzes) is because he didn't have faith in Jones/Woodley/to a lesser degree Worilds - to routinely let them pin their ears back and outright beat the man in front of them. He didn't believe those players would be succesful in dictating to the offense... that we were going to lineup our best OLBs outside of their best OTs, come right around them and win more times than not. So his hand was forced to disguise the blitzers and he is arguably right for having more faith in the athletic ability of Polamalu when we're talking power*/velocity (and even Williams). The disguised blitzes didn't work well, but I think it beat the alternative of setting up our OLBs for failure. The defense is only as good as our weakest link... OLB (shout-out to the poster who mentioned even Revis would have a hard time covering receivers in excess of 5-7 seconds in our defense).

Also this is no knock on Worilds from a power perspective.

Williams, Shazier, or Spence... any which way you put it I'm just happy Foote is gone. No more Foote Stomp celebrations for excessive pay/mediocre play.

He is not getting pub of Ryan Shazier but Vince Williams has looked good early in camp. Steelers depth at ILB could be really good.

Vince Williams has been a beast during the first week of camp. The guy has a big chip on his shoulder.
