He said hes been playing with the No. 2s (the second-team defense) during OTAs, but Spence made it clear he isnt coming back just to be a backup at inside linebacker.

I dont think anybody wants to stay with the No. 2s, he said. Were all competing as a linebacker group. I trust the coaching staff to make the best decision for this team.
i certainly do admire the guy for not being satisfied to just being a backup , but unless shazier has difficulties digesting the schemes , he has zero chance of being a starter.
hopefully lebeau can come up with some sub packages that puts him on the field with timmons and shazier.

I hope Spence makes it all the way back but after all it was Landry Jones at QB.

I think the Steelers can go 12-4, 13-3 easily this year. But if Ben misses any games, it's going to be a disaster. Grad is below average and Jones shouldn't even be in the league. Back up QB is our Achilles heel.

Will LB Sean Spence Make The Final 53?

....Spence figures to have a great shot at completing what will be an amazing comeback.

However, with rookie Ryan Shazier now slated to start alongside Lawrence Timmons in 2014, Spence might have to beat out either Terence Garvin or rookie Jordan Zumwalt for a spot on the final 53 man roster.

Winning a spot will require him playing well on special teams and that’s one area that we will need to watch closely during the preseason.

Even if Spence doesn't make the final 53, he would make the practice squad for a season. You don't invest that much time in a guy and drop him because he hasn't made it back 100% healthy. That is, if what the reports say are true about how much he's improving. The FO has been patient with him this far, one more season makes sense.

To get a player on the practice squad, dont we need to cut said player first and hope they clear waivers?

From what I understand, he was healthy and playing reasonably well in camp last season, until his finger broke. Unless, the broken finger was an excuse to give him more time to rehab.....

It's not unusual for LBs to play with broken fingers, or arms, legs, teeth for that matter.........

Honestly, I don't know those details. My point was only that we have spent a lot of time getting him rehabbed enough to be where he is. I don't think he just gets cut loose if he's not fully back. That said, if he is fully back and just can't keep up at this point, that would be a different scenario altogether.
